- Description: Traditional techniques and models used to determine the availability and failure rates of telecommunications networks are based on classic failure models such as Mean-time between Failure and Mean-time between Service Outage predictors. Network failures occur for many different reasons and occur in many different forms. These classic models only assume that the failure is caused by a hardware component of the network. With the widespread deployment of Internet technologies other factors that cause or contribute to failure in a telecommunications network must be explored. Two additional failure modes to existing published failure models, failure from Denial of Service Attacks, and failures due to Catastrophic Events have been identified and defined along with an initial outline of a generalized prediction model based on Dynamic System Theory.

- Description: The paper presents design data and indicated, brake and mean effective pressure results for two successful racing engines developed by FIAT Auto Corse for touring car applications, namely the 690 2.5 liters V6 engine powering the Alfa Romeo 155 car developed for the 1996 International Touring Car (ITC) Championship and the 420 2.0 liters in-line 4 engine powering the Alfa Romeo 156 car developed for the 1998 Campionato Italiano Superturismo. In their first year of life, the sophisticated 690 engine was delivering 500 HP with a revolution limiter of 12000 rpm, while the more conservative 420 engine was delivering 310 HP with a revolution limiter of 8500 rpm. Brake mean effective pressures of these naturally aspirated engines were very close to the maximum achievable values for the racing engine technology of the late nineties, and certainly still a good reference point for development of new racing engines. Geometrical and operating parameters of these engines are provided in detail, as well as similarity rules for derivation of new engines.

- Description: In this paper we investigate different variants for hybrid models using the Discrete Gradient method and an evolutionary strategy for determining the weights in a feed forward artificial neural network. The Discrete Gradient method has the advantage of being able to jump over many local minima and find very deep local minima. However, earlier research has shown that a good starting point for the discrete gradient method can improve the quality of the solution point. Evolutionary algorithms are best suited for global optimisation problems. Nevertheless they are cursed with longer training times and often unsuitable for real world application. For optimisation problems such as weight optimisation for ANNs in real world applications the dimensions are large and time complexity is critical. Hence the idea of a hybrid model can be a suitable option. In this paper we propose different fusion strategies for hybrid models combining the evolutionary strategy with the discrete gradient method to obtain an optimal solution much quicker. Three different fusion strategies are discussed: a linear hybrid model, an iterative hybrid model and a restricted local search hybrid model Comparative results on a range of standard datasets are provided for different fusion hybrid models.

- Description: Health benefits of children’s participation in physical activity such as reduced risk of obesity and diabetes are promoted to parents. However parents’ perceptions of injury risk in sports and how this perception may affect their choice of sport for their child is unknown. The study surveyed 5385 parents of children from 5 – 17 years in 46 sports. A total of 887 surveys were returned. The Health Belief model was the theoretical framework for the study and the sports were divided into four groups – contact, incidental collision, limited contact and non-contact. Mothers completed the forms in 63% of cases and 52.2% of the children were males. The child selected the sport in 51.6% of` cases and generally parents did not believe that their involvement in their child’s sport choice would ensure their child was safer from injury. In the main parents did not believe the sport their child participated in was less likely to cause injury than other sports and this trend increased as the level of contact increased. Trained coaches were seen as very important in reducing injury risk in sport. Generally modified sport was not seen to positively impact on the parent’s choice of sport and parents did not think that cost of protective equipment was a barrier to providing for their child. Parents generally felt that they could assess the risk of injury in a sport but were not influenced by the risk of injury when allowing their child to play a particular sport.

- Description: Because children and young teenagers usually associate in same-sex groups, psychological research concerned with adolescent aggression has often concentrated on within-sex interactions. Sociological and feminist research, however, has highlighted boys’ victimization of girls, especially through sexual harassment. This paper reports a study of boy to girl aggression as perceived by boys, girls and their teachers. Focus group discussions were conducted with groups of Year 9 adolescents (aged between 14 and 15 years) across four middle class schools in metropolitan Adelaide, South Australia. Individual interviews were also conducted with their teachers. Thematic analyses (using NUDIST software) revealed different understandings by boys, girls and teachers of the same behaviour. Girls and teachers reported that boys often use verbally offensive language including sexual harassment toward girls but boys argued that they were often not being malicious but rather just joking and that girls over-react. Boys, girls and teachers agreed that boys often harassed girls in order to impress other boys and for their own entertainment or fun. Teachers also emphasized home and cultural background factors in influencing boys’ behavior toward girls. Girls’ appearance was reported as a major contributing factor associated with boys’ victimization – while physical attractiveness could protect a girl from boys’ meanness, over-weight girls or those seen as being unattractive or “uncool” were vulnerable. However, girls were not seen universally as passive victims. Boys, girls and teachers reported that many girls respond assertively and even match boys’ aggression. Boys and girls agreed that teacher intervention was often not helpful. In contrast, teachers reported the effectiveness of school anti-harassment policies and a range of successful interventions. All three groups agreed that boys’ behavior toward girls could have devastating effects on the girl victims. This study highlights the importance of understanding behaviour from different perspectives and confirms research that emphasizes the crucial role of the peer group in influencing aggressive interactions amongst students in schools.

- Description: This research presents a classifier that aims to provide insight into a dataset in addition to achieving classification accuracies comparable to other algorithms. The classifier called, Automated Weighted Sum (AWSum) uses a weighted sum approach where feature values are assigned weights that are summed and compared to a threshold in order to classify an example. Though naive, this approach is scalable, achieves accurate classifications on standard datasets and also provides a degree of insight. By insight we mean that the technique provides an appreciation of the influence a feature value has on class values, relative to each other. AWSum provides a focus on the feature value space that allows the technique to identify feature values and combinations of feature values that are sensitive and important for a classification. This is particularly useful in fields such as medicine where this sort of micro-focus and understanding is critical in classification.

- Description: The success of the tourism industry is highly dependent on the quality of business operations. To run tourism businesses well, operators need to be skilled, flexible and innovative in order to maintain and enhance competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to share the authors’ initial insights into tourism industry capacity building via flexibly delivered online skilling and knowledge sharing. This discussion paper builds on the work of online learning research for small tourism firms conducted in Europe and compares the European approach and considers how the European approach to content development and delivery informed a recently piloted Australian online skilling program. The paper also provides insights into online user behaviour and challenges fundamental research expectations. While both programs have focussed tourism information and skills development, the Australian pilot has been embedded in the Tourism Accreditation Board of Victoria and is being utilised to enable operators to complete tourism industry accreditation. Aiming to raise industry standards and move away from ineffective silo approaches to industry training and capacity building, this pilot reflects the importance of and contributes to the development of an effective national voluntary accreditation system.

- Description: The significant cost of injury rehabilitation to the individual and the community combined with the funding provided for injury prevention (IP) research over the past decade demands some measurement of the effectiveness of IP programs. The measurement of IP strategies is a complex issue because injury prevention relies on the behaviours of the sports people involved. This study involved qualitative analyses of interviews conducted with ten netball players and seven football players. The players were selected from the highest and lowest senior grades of a semi-rural community level club. Data collected from the interviews were transcribed and analysed using themes to categorise the information. The findings highlight the different structural issues faced by community level netball and Australian Rules football players. Players who had been exposed to higher levels of competition appeared to have an increased use of and better attitude towards the use of IP measures. Some of the contrasts highlighted were the structure, access and availability of IP measures to players. Netball players did not have access to sports trainers or protective equipment and the choice to use IP strategies was a more personal choice. In contrast, the football clubs had sports trainers and protective equipment was offered to players at no cost. The most significant theme emerging from the study related to the social influences at the community level. The players’ attitudes and beliefs were directly attributable to the acceptance and promotion of IP strategies by significant people within the clubs.

- Description: Increased access to university by students with different backgrounds and capabilities from those in the past has posed, and continues to pose, dilemmas for lecturers who seek effective ways of addressing the challenge of undergraduate literacy and learning. To this end, we have been engaged on a Committee for University Teaching and Staff Development (CUTSD) funded program that we call TULIP (Tertiary Undergraduate Literacy Integration Program) which focuses on the integration of tertiary literacy within content teaching as a means of enhancing student literacy. The broad aim of the TULIP Project was to build on collaborative and reflective teaching and learning partnerships between lecturers and students, between lecturers across two universities, and between lecturers in disparate disciplines. The project developed, trialed and evaluated a suite of learner-centred literacy strategies that comprise the TULIP Resource Kit which foregrounds the embeddedness of tertiary literacy within content teaching.

- Description: In 2001 the Victorian Government launched its Community Building initiative. As part of this initiative the government funded 11 locally based community building demonstration projects. One of these projects is located within the Pyrenees Shire. In this discussion paper the authors examine the Pyrenees Shire’s Community Building Demonstration Project, describing the program and its objectives. They focus on the factors which have had a significant impact on the community building process within the municipality, identifying factors which have both facilitated and impeded the process. In terms of facilitating factors they identify a number: the involvement of community champions, strong local government support and community readiness, the capacity to deliver ‘runs on the board’ early in the life of the project, along with a flexible planning process. Conversely, they identify factors which have impeded the community building process in the Shire. Lack of continuity of personnel, an inability to develop shared understanding on occasions and difficulties associated with engaging disparate groups are described. This paper is significant for a number of reasons. In the first instance, it contributes useful, ‘real time’ insights into the implementation of community building in regional Victoria. Secondly it may, through its contribution to theory building and managerial practice, develop and strengthen community building programs in the future. Finally, at the level of public policy, it may contribute to the growing body of knowledge around the efficiency, effectiveness and appropriateness of these types of regional interventions.

- Description: Personal information stored in large government databases is a prime target for criminals because of its potential use in identity theft and associated crime, such as fraud. In 2007-2008, a number of very high-profile cases of data loss within the British Government, its departments and non-departmental bodies raised three pressing issues of public significance: (1) how broad was the loss across agencies; (2) how deep was each loss incident; and (3) what counter-measures (organisational and technical) could be put in place to prevent further loss? This paper provides a chronological review of data loss incidents, and assesses the potential to mitigate risk, given organisational structures and processes, and taking into account current government calls for further medium and long-term acquisition and storage of citizen's private data. The potential use of the "lost" credentials is discussed in the context of identity theft. © 2009 IEEE.
