Description: The topic of curriculum and democracy, when related to the idea of young children is a fascinating one. Although notions of democracy can be readily related to older children, particularly those in secondary education, ideas around democracy and younger children have been focused on children's rights, rather than children's participation in democratic processes. This article examines the place of democracy in early childhood curricula, along with the underpinning philosophical bases underpinning curricula choices in relation to democracy. It will then identify some recent research around how the issues related to involving children in democracy have been investigated in early childhood services. Description: Conversational AI is a sub-domain of artificial intelligence that deals with speech-based or text-based AI agents that have the capability to simulate and automate conversations and verbal interactions. A Goal Oriented Conversational Agent (GOCA) is a conversational AI agent that attempts to solve a specific problem for the users as per their inputs. The development of Reinforcement Learning algorithms has opened up new opportunities in research related to conversational AI, due to the striking similarity the algorithm bears to the way a conversation takes place. This chapter aims to describe a novel, hybrid conversational AI architecture using Deep Reinforcement Learning that can give state-of-the-art results on the tasks of Intent Classification, Entity Recognition, Dialog Management, State Tracking, Information Retrieval and Natural Language Response Generation. The architecture also consists of external AI modules, focused on carrying out intelligent tasks pertaining to the healthcare sector. Description: Galectin-11 (LGALS-11) and galectin-14 (LGALS-14) are ruminant specific galectins, first reported in sheep. Although their roles in parasite immunity are still being elucidated, it appears that they influence protection against parasites. In gastrointestinal infections with the nematode Haemonchus contortus, both galectin-11 and galectin-14 appear to be protective. However, in a chronic infection of liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, these galectins may aid parasite survival. To unravel the structural, functional, and ligand profile of galectin-11 and galectin-14, recombinant production of these proteins is vital. Here we present the recombinant production of soluble galectin-11 and galectin-14 from domestic sheep for in vitro and structural biology studies. These methods include parasite cultivation and infection, galectin staining of host and parasite tissue, surface staining of parasites with recombinant galectins, pull-down assays to identify endogenous galectin binding proteins, and in vitro assays to monitor the effect of galectins on parasite development. © 2022, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Description: This practice-based example explores how Monash University Library used the research skill development (RSD) framework to develop an intensive orientation program for a diverse group of postgraduate nursing students.We addressed the needs of this mature-age, return to study, professional cohort by creating a three-day program that aimed to build transferability of skills required for successful research. TheRSD framework guided us as educators in a number ofways, including providing a structure for the design of the workshops, creating a range of authentic materials that covered all phases of the research process and scaffolding the requisite research skills we wanted the students to develop. Description: A clusterwise linear regression problem consists of finding a number of linear functions each approximating a subset of the given data. In this paper, the limited memory bundle method is modified and combined with the incremental approach to solve this problem using its nonsmooth optimization formulation. The main contribution of the proposed method is to obtain a fast solution time for large-scale clusterwise linear regression problems. The proposed algorithm is tested on small and large real-world data sets and compared with other algorithms for clusterwise linear regression. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is especially efficient in data sets with large numbers of data points and input variables. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Description: Present Dynamic VM Consolidation (DVMC) algorithms assume that optimal energy efficiency can be achieved via maximum load on Physical Machines (PMs). Such assumption has become invalid with the advent of the highly energy proportional PMs. Additionally, these algorithms consider only varying resource demand, ignoring dissimilarity of workload finishing time, aka the VM Release Time (VMRT), whereas both aspects are strongly associated with energy consumption. Consequently, traditional algorithms fail to proffer optimal performance under real Cloud scenarios. Although minimization of VM migration brings massive benefit for Cloud Data Center (CDC), it is complete opposite of what is needed to minimize energy consumption through DVMC. Description: The aim of this chapter is to discuss parent-child stress among different cultures in relation to parents' perceptions and their involvement in mathematics homework and children's academic achievement. Several decades of research have demonstrated that parental involvement in children's achievement is associated with a variety of positive and negative academic and motivational outcomes. It is argued that parents' involvement may matter more for some children than for others and parents are active participants rather than passive observers in children's education. This chapter provides insights on how parental involvement in homework can make a difference and why excessive involvement of parents can cause stress for both parents and children. Description: In central Victoria monitoring of the fecal indicators Total Coliform and Escherichia Coliform at around 50 mineral spring sites over a period of more than three decades show distinct patterns in contamination. Criteria for examination include both the count levels and occurrence of positive readings. Initially, the springs were unsanitary dug wells, pits, and shallow 3-7 m deep bores. To overcome the recidivism, a replacement program utilizing 30-150 m deep bores was initiated. All the springs had been sited near evidence of subaqueous discharge or exfiltration of mineralized water in the base of highland valleys. Mineral water evolves and circulates in conductive fissure fault and joint systems in the bedrock. Historically a gold-mining region, nearly all sites owe their discovery to alluvial mining activities. Situated in seasonally active mixing zones at the confluence of flow systems, the vulnerability has been reflected in both the development technique and the bacteriological ambience. Catchment use, forest practices, urbanization, subdivision, and the increasing sewerage backlog in settled areas now contribute to a fecal bacterial load in the catchments of the springs and, in particular, the proximal streams and gullies. Within the data set, distinct seasonal patterns appear in the presence, count, ratio between indicators, and/or the absence of fecal bacteria. Spring contamination and bacterial predominance correlate with seasonal catchment hydrodynamics, in spite of event-related episodes. Deep replacement bores reduce or extinguish the occurrence of scherichia Coliform, while some sites may return positive Total Coliform counts, which suggests the need for disinfection during maintenance procedures. © 2023 American Geophysical Union.

Description: Remote patient monitoring involves the collection of data from wearable sensors that typically requires analysis in real time. The real-time analysis of data streaming continuously to a server challenges data mining algorithms that have mostly been developed for static data residing in central repositories. Remote patient monitoring also generates huge data sets that present storage and management problems. Although virtual records of every health event throughout an individual’s lifespan known as the electronic health record are rapidly emerging, few electronic records accommodate data from continuous remote patient monitoring. These factors combine to make data analytics with continuous patient data very challenging. In this chapter, benefits for data analytics inherent in the use of standards for clinical concepts for remote patient monitoring is presented. The openEHR standard that describes the way in which concepts are used in clinical practice is well suited to be adopted as the standard required to record meta-data about remote monitoring. The claim is advanced that this is likely to facilitate meaningful real time analyses with big remote patient monitoring data. Description: This chapter explores academic writing on panopticism, whilst also considering issues and challenges faced by researchers wishing to use this concept to make sense of the social impact of surveillance technologies within schools. Initially, Foucault’s discussion of the panopticon in his influential text Discipline and punish (1977) is examined, before some contemporary developments of key (post)panoptic ideas are analysed. These insights are then applied as panoptic themes are developed that could aid researchers focusing upon school observational practices. Some of the practical limitations of the panoptic metaphor are discussed as student resistance to school discipline is pondered. Ultimately, it is argued that while panopticism still holds some value for school surveillance researchers, an awareness of the inherent limitations should also encourage them to retool, as and when appropriate, through occasionally abandoning the concept and drawing on other insights. Staying within Foucault’s writings, ‘technologies of the self’ and biopower are offered as two possible alternatives

Description: Internet of things (IoT) is a network of physical objects with embedded systems that are able to communicate with each other via the Internet. It leads to a distributed network of devices that can communicate with humans and objects. The implementation of IoT will provide benefits, but it also raises security issues that affect data integrity and privacy of the companies. In order to overcome security issues, blockchain technology is used. This chapter is based on up-to-date research on the blockchain as well as IoT with the purpose of studying the blockchain as potential solutions to secure IoT data. Both blockchain and IoT are new research areas into existing research, which support the use of a qualitative research method. The results indicate that blockchain is used to secure data management, but it is not a complete solution. Most of the security issues are related to devices, and blockchain technology handles information and secures identities, stock traceability and transactions, which are made without human interaction and with automated storage management. There are still some barriers to creating benefits work into reality. This chapter is focused on investigating the integration of IoT and blockchain to analyze and improve security issues.

Description: Much is written about social media analytics, learning analytics and health care industry research projects. However, it is rare to find all three domains in the same study, as each discipline is usually kept separate from another. The concern with this isolation approach is the probability of missing essential synergies, leading to a combined effect more significant than the sum of their particular products. Social media analytics may uncover key social media search terms that reflect the language used by groups of people engaging in risky drinking behaviour. At the same time, the view of behaviour through a psychometric testing lens may reveal other things. This chapter describes both social media analytics and learning analytics from the perspective of the health care industry. The chapter explains the intersection of social media analytics and learning analytics; in the first instance, the Rasch measurement model is used to discover the probability of agreement relating to human behaviour issues; a case study amplifies health services provision outcomes. The results from the social media analytics revealed that groups’ risky drinking behaviour data collected by Talkwalker showed linguistic variations with the double meanings of words used, which affected results. The learning analytics of alcohol consumption included a post-hoc comparison using a Bonferroni correction t-test which revealed the mean of never-married people was significantly higher than married people. The significance of these findings demonstrates that data analysis should be open to using a mixture of data analytics tools to reach a finer-grained interpretation to model other complex problems. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
