Description: 25th-16th November 2019, Post Office Gallery, Federation University, Ballarat. ‘The Revolution is Us’ (La rivoluzione siamo Noi) showcases select films, works on paper and sculptures by internationally acclaimed German artist Joseph Beuys (1921 – 1986), one of the most influential Conceptual and performance artists of the second half of the 20th century. Known for his highly original and controversial ideas, themes and practices, including large editions of the same or similar works in “Multiples”, Beuys attempted to make art more democratic, collapsing the space between life and art through public discourse, performance and actions, believing “…everyone is an artist”. A sculptor, performance artist, printmaker, political activist, and teacher, Beuys was also an important contributor to the avant-garde FLUXUS movement alongside George Maciunas, John Cage, Alison Knowles, Nam June Paik and Yoko Ono, among others. Beuys championed the possibilities of artistic creation to enact positive social and political change and activate the intellectual and creative capacity in all of us. Through his notion of “social sculpture”, Beuys believed in the power of art to be able to activate and transform society. His “Multiples”, series were created in opposition to market forces and in response to making art accessible to all. As a teacher Beuys touched many and continues to do so today. Studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1947, Beuys was appointed professor of monumental sculpture at the Akademie in 1961 but was dismissed in 1972 after accepting students who had been previously rejected. Major works include How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare (1965), I Like America and America Likes Me (1974), 7000 Oak Trees (1982). Joseph Beuys’s work is held in collections worldwide including the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Tate, London; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, and the Kunstmuseum Basel. Description: Wed 15 – Sat 25 July Post Office Gallery Laraine Peters' recent drawn studies express her interest in the analysis of stromatolites that date back some 3.5 billion years and cyanobacteria, believed to be the progenitors of all life forms on earth. Peters is also interested in the close connection of cyanobacteria to soil, water, air and sunlight and the way in which these forms of bacteria mirror similar relationships between other descendant life forms and the land. She is also concerned with the connections and perceived metaphors that exist between these basic elements through a Jungian, archetypal perspective and need that she considers resides in all of us - to be more intimately connected with the earth. For Peters, the stromatolite sculpted forms, with mellifluous lines and patterns, together with the macroscopic and the microscopic elements, provide a rich source of visual material with an artistic tension that inveigles her to pursue and understand her subject. Description: Images recording travel have been part of numerous cultural traditions enabling extraordinary discoveries and providing historical documents of great beauty used for millennia across many cultures. Lauren Murray’s work and research explores a visual journey within an observed environment through "fourteen layers of glass" that includes the car window, the lens of the camera, the lens of her glasses and the surface of her iPad - the nature of light, time and distance and ongoing changes to the climate of particular interest to her. Utilising photography, drawing, digital and analogue media, Murray presents 16 digitally augmented photographs and a 9.6 metre story map - beautiful yet uncannily prescient images and visual narratives of place, time and season. This exhibition constitutes the visual outcomes emerging from a practice-led Masters research project at the School of Arts, Federation University, Australia. Lauren Murray is supported by an Australian Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset Scholarship through Federation University Australia.

Description: 22nd November-7th December 2019, Post Office Gallery, Federation University Australia, Ballarat. In Georgia Janetzki's research she explores how self-portraiture can be an embodied methodology and starting point for an investigation that goes beyond oneself: her experimental self-portraiture addressing the personal and by doing so, incorporating a wider community of female artists. Examining how women have always been present as artists but omitted from the canon of Western art history, Janetzki investigates this disconnect and at the same time poses the question, why is the canon also nothing like us. To assist her research, working as a modern-day flaneuse, Janetzki walked through art galleries and museums, observing the gender balance within our public institutions, travelling between home and university using the train as a studio for making images as well as provide safe passage. This exhibition constitutes the visual outcomes emerging from a practice-led Masters research project at the School of Arts, Federation University Australia. Description: Exhibition dates: 3 August-13 November 2021 Twice is Lucky, 3 Times a Charm’ is Rodney Forbes’ 20th solo exhibition with Australian Galleries. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, these vibrant paintings explore fortune, transformation and love. This exhibition features ‘A Submariner Dreams of Home’, winner of the 2020 Maritime Art Prize. Rodney Forbes’ paintings address deeply poignant subject matter through dreamlike and surreal imagery. Figures and objects float against his trademark palette of bright, luminous colours, drawing the viewer in to explore a rich narrative. “Although the subject matter of Forbes’ paintings deals with aspects of the human condition, his paintings contain a degree of humour without which his intensity of vision would degenerate into affected angst. Description: 31st August - 24th September 2016 Vin Ryan's work has been described as an attempt at 'charting his neighbourhood surrounds and airing some of our dirty laundry’. He does this by methodically documenting the raw materials and minor details of everyday, urban existence. This exhibition is a very personal response to the artist’s own environment in Melbourne’s western suburbs. It is a record of setting but also situation. It considers the breadth of experience within a suburban setting by observing the nature strips, car parks and footpaths contained there. At the same time it also examines interior domestic spaces, inviting us to look with fresh eyes at the places that we call home within a suburban environment. Description: Curated by Kim Anderson. 2nd December 2015 - 30th January 2016 WALL | PAPER brings together six artists working on and with paper and encompasses drawing, printmaking and sculptural works. A meticulous and methodical approach to art-making is shared by all, along with repeated forms, marks and motifs surrounding an individual singular focus. Each artist takes inspiration from different aspects of the external world that trigger a personal emotional response, and in translating these onto paper evoke themes of landscape, fate, memory and loss. Where's Russell : 3rd Year Visual Arts Students

Description: 15th November 2016-9th January 2017 This year’s exhibition of completing students in the Bachelor of Visual Arts at Federation University features the work of eight students who have witnessed the change from Monash University to Federation University. For the past three years these students have worked assiduously to research and develop a personal visual language which will enable them to make their mark in the visual arts. In spite of trends which have seen much argument about the relevance of the object in art and the purging of traditional mediums, the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design continues to promote the notion of art as ‘making special’ and remains one of the few art schools in Australia with the facilities to cater for every aspect of the visual arts while still enabling students to make work which is relevant in a contemporary context. These past three years have seen considerable change for both the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design and the students themselves. Among those changes there has been a University wide review of staffing which resulted in the retirement of the art school’s longest serving employee, Mr Russell Snelton. Russell served the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design as a studio technician for forty years during which time he won the respect and admiration of hundreds of students. This exhibition acknowledges Russell and the positive impact he has had on the students who have requested that the exhibition be titled “Where’s Russell?” in his honour. Image: Where's Russell?
