- Description: Use of remote healthcare monitoring application (HMA) can not only enable healthcare seeker to live a normal life while receiving treatment but also prevent critical healthcare situation through early intervention. For this to happen, the HMA have to provide continuous monitoring through sensors attached to the patient's body or in close proximity to the patient. Owing to elasticity nature of the cloud, recently, the implementation of HMA in cloud is of intense research. Although, cloud-based implementation provides scalability for implementation, the health data of patient is super-sensitive and requires high level of privacy and security for cloud-based shared storage. In addition, protection of real-time arrival of large volume of sensor data from continuous monitoring of patient poses bigger challenge. In this work, we propose a self-protective security framework for our cloud-based HMA. Our framework enable the sensor data in the cloud from (1) unauthorized access and (2) self-protect the data in case of breached access using biometrics. The framework is detailed in the paper using mathematical formulation and algorithms. © 2014 IEEE.
A blockchain-based deep-learning-driven architecture for quality routing in wireless sensor networks

- Description: Over the past few years, great importance has been given to wireless sensor networks (WSNs) as they play a significant role in facilitating the world with daily life services like healthcare, military, social products, etc. However, heterogeneous nature of WSNs makes them prone to various attacks, which results in low throughput, and high network delay and high energy consumption. In the WSNs, routing is performed using different routing protocols like low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH), heterogeneous gateway-based energy-aware multi-hop routing (HMGEAR), etc. In such protocols, some nodes in the network may perform malicious activities. Therefore, four deep learning (DL) techniques and a real-time message content validation (RMCV) scheme based on blockchain are used in the proposed network for the detection of malicious nodes (MNs). Moreover, to analyse the routing data in the WSN, DL models are trained on a state-of-the-art dataset generated from LEACH, known as WSN-DS 2016. The WSN contains three types of nodes: sensor nodes, cluster heads (CHs) and the base station (BS). The CHs after aggregating the data received from the sensor nodes, send it towards the BS. Furthermore, to overcome the single point of failure issue, a decentralized blockchain is deployed on CHs and BS. Additionally, MNs are removed from the network using RMCV and DL techniques. Moreover, legitimate nodes (LNs) are registered in the blockchain network using proof-of-authority consensus protocol. The protocol outperforms proof-of-work in terms of computational cost. Later, routing is performed between the LNs using different routing protocols and the results are compared with original LEACH and HMGEAR protocols. The results show that the accuracy of GRU is 97%, LSTM is 96%, CNN is 92% and ANN is 90%. Throughput, delay and the death of the first node are computed for LEACH, LEACH with DL, LEACH with RMCV, HMGEAR, HMGEAR with DL and HMGEAR with RMCV. Moreover, Oyente is used to perform the formal security analysis of the designed smart contract. The analysis shows that blockchain network is resilient against vulnerabilities. © 2013 IEEE.

- Description: At several mineral exploration drilling sites in Australia, weakly consolidated formations mainly consist of sand particles that are poorly bonded by cementing agents such as clay, iron oxide cement or calcite. These formations are being encountered when drilling boreholes to the depth of up to 200 m. To study the behaviour of these materials, thick-walled hollow cylinder (TWHC) and solid cylindrical synthetic specimens were designed and prepared by adding Portland cement and water to sand grains. The effects of different parameters such as water and cement contents, grain size distribution and mixture curing time on the characteristics of the samples were studied to identify the mixture closely resembling the formation at the drilling site. The Hoek triaxial cell was modified to allow the visual monitoring of grain debonding and borehole breakout processes during the laboratory tests. The results showed the significance of real-time visual monitoring in determining the initiation of the borehole breakout. The size-scale effect study on TWHC specimens revealed that with the increasing borehole size, the ductility of the specimen decreases, however, the axial and lateral stiffnesses of the TWHC specimen remain unchanged. Under different confining pressures the lateral strain at the initiation point of borehole breakout is considerably lower in a larger size borehole (20 mm) compared to that in a smaller one (10 mm). Also, it was observed that the level of peak strength increment in TWHC specimens decreases with the increasing confining pressure. © 2015 Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

- Description: Real-world sequential decision-making tasks are usually complex, and require trade-offs between multiple - often conflicting - objectives. However, the majority of research in reinforcement learning (RL) and decision-theoretic planning assumes a single objective, or that multiple objectives can be handled via a predefined weighted sum over the objectives. Such approaches may oversimplify the underlying problem, and produce suboptimal results. This extended abstract outlines the limitations of using a semi-blind iterative process to solve multi-objective decision making problems. - Description: This study investigated the effectiveness of an Internet-based intervention for people with panic disorder. Twenty-two participants met criteria for panic disorder and were randomly assigned to either the treatment or a self-monitoring control condition. The study took place over 3 weeks and consisted of one week of self-monitoring prior to the intervention group accessing the program for one week, followed by one week of post-intervention assessment. Participants were assessed on measures pertaining to panic, negative affect, body vigilance, anxiety sensitivity and self-efficacy in managing panic. The treatment condition was associated with significant reductions in all variables except anxiety sensitivity and depressive affect. This type of intervention for people with fearful panic attacks holds promise as an efficacious and economical method for treating spontaneous panic.

- Description: Despite evidence that exercise has been found to be effective in the treatment of depression, it is unclear whether these data can be extrapolated to bipolar disorder. Available evidence for bipolar disorder is scant, with no existing randomized controlled trials having tested the impact of exercise on depressive, manic or hypomanic symptomatology. Although exercise is often recommended in bipolar disorder, this is based on extrapolation from the unipolar literature, theory and clinical expertise and not empirical evidence. In addition, there are currently no available empirical data on program variables, with practical implications on frequency, intensity and type of exercise derived from unipolar depression studies. The aim of the current paper is to explore the relationship between exercise and bipolar disorder and potential mechanistic pathways. Given the high rate of medical co-morbidities experienced by people with bipolar disorder, it is possible that exercise is a potentially useful and important intervention with regard to general health benefits; however, further research is required to elucidate the impact of exercise on mood symptomology. © 2015 Thomson, Turner, Lauder, Gigler, Berk, Singh, Pasco, Berk and Sylvia.

- Description: The research reported here utilised in depth interviews to investigate the contingent element of self-esteem and its underlying reasons in one Chinese individual living in a collectivist orientated culture. The results suggest this individual demonstrated some characteristics of contingent self-esteem. This may be attributed to such influences as: parents and significant others, educational experiences and the collectivist culture. It reveals a connection between a highly controlling parenting style and education in a collective culture and the development of the contingent part of self-esteem. Both positive and negative effects are identified in relation to the development of the contingent part of self-esteem. The interviewee is revealed as a person who has a strong sense of discipline, obligation and responsibility to his family and society, and who simultaneously experiences a substantial mental challenge and stress, due to constant external social comparisons and evaluations of self.

- Description: This paper presents the viability study of utilising a rod or ball mill to grind a ‘5 mm grit’ to 100% passing 2.36 mm and fit in with a desired particle size analysis. The aim is to introduce this grit into the concrete grade sand produced at the Hanson owned Axedale Sand & Gravel quarry to reduce generated waste and improve the process efficiency. A ball mill and rod mill were used to grind the samples at an interval of 5 and 10 minutes. From the laboratory experimental analysis, it was found that a ball mill with 5 minutes grinding time in closed-circuit using a classifier to remove undersize and reintroduce oversize to the mill would be a viable option in an industrial setting. A Bond Ball Mill Grindability Test was undertaken to determine the grindability of the 5 mm grit, which served to determine the power (kWh/t) required to grind it to 100% passing 2.36 mm. The bond ball mill grindability test showed that the grit had a work index value of 17.66 kWh/t. This work index gives an actual work input of 13.54 kWh/t, meaning that for every ton of feed material introduced to the mill, 13.54 kWh of work input is required to grind it to 150 microns. © 2021 Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

- Description: This study utilises interviews to investigate issues within a joint venture (JV) in China. The findings demonstrate that the organisational culture of this JV was dominated by its former state-owned enterprise (SOE) culture. The culture was influenced by Chinese culture, particularly by Maoist ideology. This organisational culture appeared not to be compatible with the liberalist ideology of the capitalist market economy. This incompatibility had contributed to management difficulties and financial losses for the JV. Discontent existed between the Chinese staff/workers and Western expatriates. Changing the organisational culture by changing staff may assist the JV to survive in the market economy.

A case study of teacher roles in engaging with student aspirations

- Description: This thesis investigated the complex role teachers play, both formally and informally, in relation to engaging and supporting student aspirations. Due to the links that have been established between aspirations and school completion and involvement in tertiary education, aspirations are important in an educational context. Yet, despite the abundance of aspiration related research, most has focused on student or parent perspectives, with few scholars targeting teacher perceptions of their roles in relation to student aspirations. This research is therefore significant as it addresses this gap through a single case study investigating perceptions of P-12 teachers from a peri-urban independent school in Victoria, Australia. Data were collected from 57 teachers via survey, interviews, and school document analysis. A lens of research-as-bricoleur, incorporating the theoretical frameworks of Bronfenbrenner (1979; 1994), Turner (2001), Gottfredson (1981, 1996), and Patton and McMahon (2015), provided the interpretative basis for the applied thematic analysis of the different data sets. Findings demonstrated differences in the way that teachers conceptualised their role in engaging with student aspirations. While teacher participants identified various formal and informal roles that they played in relation to engaging student aspirations, they also reported a lack of clear guidance or guidelines, necessitating the development of personal processes to direct their involvement. Other important findings highlighted a number of factors that teacher participants perceived as facilitating or impeding possible roles they could play in engaging student aspirations. The understandings emanating from this research provide substantive assistance to stakeholders, including school administrators and teacher educators, in appreciating and appropriately responding to an area of practice which remains misunderstood and without clear policy or guidelines. Ultimately, this research adds to the growing body of research into student aspirations and the concomitant importance of teachers in helping students aspire to and achieve their goals.

- Description: Recently, the provision of food and water resources of two of the world's largest river basins, the Murray and the Yangtze, has been significantly altered through widespread landscape modification. Long-term sedimentary archives, dating back for some centuries from wetlands of these river basins, reveal that rapid, basin-wide development has reduced the resilience of biological communities, resulting in considerable decline in ecosystem services, including water quality. Large-scale human disturbance to river systems, due to river regulation during the mid-20th century, has transformed the hydrology of rivers and wetlands, causing widespread modification of aquatic biological communities. Changes to cladoceran zooplankton (water fleas) were used to assess the historical hydrology and ecology of three Murray and Yangtze river wetlands over the past century. Subfossil assemblages of cladocerans retrieved from sediment cores (94, 45, and 65 cm) of three wetlands: Kings Billabong (Murray), Zhangdu, and Liangzi lakes (Yangtze), showed strong responses to hydrological changes in the river after the mid-20th century. In particular, river regulation caused by construction of dams and weirs together with river channel modifications, has led to significant hydrological alterations. These hydrological disturbances were either (1) a prolonged inundation of wetlands or (2) reduced river flow, both of which caused variability in wetland depth. Inevitably, these phenomena have subsequently transformed the natural wetland habitats, leading to a switch in cladoceran assemblages to species preferring poor water quality, and in some cases to eutrophication. The quantitative and qualitative decline of wetland water conditions is indicative of reduced ecosystem services, and requires effective restoration measures for both river basins which have been impacted by recent socioeconomic development and climate change. © 2016 Author(s).

- Description: In this paper we explore ways in which adults engage children's and young adult books in primary and secondary schools in relation to Bakhtin's (1981) posited chronotope. We base our discussion on an analysis of experienced practising teachers' own engagement with books that are offered to children and young adults as part of teachers' didactic activities in developing literacy skills and literature appreciation in classrooms, drawing on the concept of the chronotope as going beyond the didactic to embrace the artistic and cultural in children's responses to their reading and writing. The suggestive possibilities of the chronotope as an organising feature of teaching reading and writing in a number of genres and production of text types, affords new ways of approaching reading by teachers, at the same time as it invites these teachers to examine their own responses to the literature that they engage in the process. The concept of the chronotope opens up spaces for literary and pedagogical responses that derive from children's own experience of their world, but we argue that teacher responses that are restricted by their own views of the world may inhibit a full exploration by children of the possibilities that the books that they encounter as didactically bound and culturally limiting.
A class of Increasing Positively Homogeneous functions for which global optimization problem is NP-hard

- Description: It is well known that global optimization problems are, generally speaking, computationally infeasible, that is solving them would require an unreasonably large amount of time and/or space. In certain cases, for example, when objective functions and constraints are convex, it is possible to construct a feasible algorithm for solving global optimization problem successfully. Convexity, however, is not a phenomenon to be often expected in the applications. Nonconvex problems frequently arise in many industrial and scienti¯c areas. Therefore, it is only natural to try to replace convexity with some other structure at least for some classes of nonconvex optimization problems to render the global optimization problem feasible. A theory of abstract convexity has been developed as a result of the above considerations. Monotonic analysis, a branch of abstract convex analysis, is analogous in many ways to convex analysis, and sometimes is even simpler. It turned out that many problems of nonconvex optimization encountered in applications can be described in terms of monotonic functions. The analogies with convex analysis were considered to aid in solving some classes of nonconvex optimization problems. In this thesis we will focus on one of the elements of monotonic analysis - Increasing Positively Homogeneous functions of degree one or in short IPH functions. The aim of present research is to show that finding the solution and ²-approximation to the solution of the global optimization problem for IPH functions restricted to a unit simplex is an NP-hard problem. These results can be further extended to positively homogeneous functions of degree ´, ´ > 0.

- Description: Data mining is often performed with datasets associated with diseases in order to increase insights that can ultimately lead to improved prevention or treatment. Classification algorithms can achieve high levels of predictive accuracy but have limited application for facilitating the insight that leads to deeper understanding of aspects of the disease. This is because the representation of knowledge that arises from classification algorithms is too opaque, too complex or too sparse to facilitate insight. Clustering, association and visualisation approaches enable greater scope for clinicians to be engaged in a way that leads to insight, however predictive accuracy is compromised or non-existent. This research investigates the practical applications of Automated Weighted Sum, (AWSum), a classification algorithm that provides accuracy comparable to other techniques whilst providing some insight into the data. This is achieved by calculating a weight for each feature value that represents its influence on the class value. Clinicians are very familiar with weighted sum scoring scales so the internal representation is intuitive and easily understood. This paper presents results from the use of the AWSum approach with data from patients suffering from Cystic Fibrosis.

- Description: Video coding algorithms attempt to minimize the significant commonality that exists within a video sequence. Each new video coding standard contains tools that can perform this task more efficiently compared to its predecessors. In this work, we form a coarse representation of the current frame by minimizing commonality within that frame while preserving important structural properties of the frame. The building blocks of this coarse representation are rectangular regions called cuboids, which are computationally simple and has a compact description. Then we propose to employ the coarse frame as an additional source for predictive coding of the current frame. Experimental results show an improvement in bit rate savings over a reference codec for HEVC, with minor increase in the codec computational complexity. © 2020 IEEE.

A collaborative exploration of creativity, doodling and flow : A practice-based education inquiry

- Description: The initial stage of this inquiry is a solo exploration of my definition of doodling, how doodling became my preferred artistic process, and reflectively examines the factors that contribute to my experience of flow moments when creating art. An intrinsic component of this solo research was finding new ways to create moments of flow when working individually, and reflecting how they could influence and shape the second stage of the project. The second stage of this inquiry investigates doodling in collaboration with four participating artists. In an attempt to flesh out the spaces between conscious and unconscious artistic interventions, and the role that outside influences can play on the creative process, this collaborative inquiry developed into an examination of the factors which influence co-creation during different stages of art making. The framework for this second inquiry was created by utilising insights gained from the initial solo investigation Accordingly, this research includes multiple strands of artistic exploration, including solo works, works created in collaboration, and interviews with the collaborating artists involved in the project. Selected key solo works and all artistic collaborations are included in the body of this exegesis to encourage immersion in this practice based research. Beginning as an artist and incorporating the different roles of researcher and teacher into the work, this research is an a/r/tographical inquiry into the way these oftentimes overlapping identities influence and guided the research. The outcomes from this research include insights into my creative processes, revealing previously unacknowledged tensions between the need for creative control and flow. One of the most important outcomes from this research was the development of non-verbal conversations between artists, and the way the collaborative process has the potential to both encourage and hinder flow moments. This work is a self-study which incorporates others in relation to my own work. I believe it holds significant relevance to a wider artistic audience seeking a different perspective on encouraging collaborative artistic flow, and the method of collaborative doodling enacted in this research has potential applications in both formal and informal educational settings.

- Description: This study combined a fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) and two advanced decision-tree algorithms to predict air-overpressure (AOp) caused by mine blasting. The FDM was used for input selection. Thus, the panel of experts selected four inputs, including powder factor, max charge per delay, stemming length, and distance from the blast face. Once the input selection was completed, two decision-tree algorithms, namely extreme gradient boosting tree (XGBoost-tree) and random forest (RF), were applied using the inputs selected by the experts. The models are evaluated with the following criteria: correlation coefficient, mean absolute error, gains chart, and Taylor diagram. The applied models were compared with the XGBoost-tree and RF models using the full set of data without input selection results. The results of hybridization showed that the XGBoost-tree model outperformed the RF model. Concerning the gains, the XGBoost-tree again outperformed the RF model. In comparison with the single decision-tree models, the single models had slightly better correlation coefficients; however, the hybridized models were simpler and easier to understand, analyze and implement. In addition, the Taylor diagram showed that the models applied outperformed some other conventional machine learning models, including support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors, and artificial neural network. Overall, the findings of this study suggest that combining expert opinion and advanced decision-tree algorithms can result in accurate and easy to understand predictions of AOp resulting from blasting in quarry sites. © 2020, International Association for Mathematical Geosciences.
A community-wide approach to reducing risky drinking cultures in young people in rural Australia

- Description: Objective: This study evaluated the impact of a multi-faceted, harm minimisation program addressing youth alcohol change and risky drinking behaviours in rural Australia. The role and influence of a multi-tiered community approach to changing alcohol cultures is examined. Setting: An alcohol culture change project for young people (12–18 years) was implemented in rural Victoria. It was informed by the Alcohol Cultures Framework, comprising community-wide events and youth-focused activities, co-designed with young people. The approach aimed at maximising engagement and reducing alcohol-related harm by targeting the shared activities and drinking practices of young people, parents and the community. Participants: Participants (n = 446) provided feedback specific to three key program activities for promoting alcohol change. Design: Mixed methods: Feedback sheets were collected, and interviews and focus groups were conducted with program participants. Results: Participants indicated that the program had informed their understanding of the way people in their region drink, and the social norms and practices around alcohol that encourage risky drinking. It influenced their short- and medium-term reactions, learnings and activities relating to alcohol consumption. The impact of the program was greatest in adults than young people although reflective learning and some behaviour change were evident across all age groups and community clusters. Conclusion: Community-wide health promotion events offer participants a deeper understanding of the ways in which dominant alcohol cultures inform the practices and activities of young people within a broader community context. Ensuring health promotion programs within a whole-of-community approach are established longer term, is recommended. © 2022 The Authors.
