- Description: The objective of this project was to investigate the potential of electrokinetic treatment techniques to stabilise volume change characteristics of expansive soils. The investigations were carried out in the laboratory using locally collected expansive soils from three locations in central Victoria, Australia. A layer of soil was placed in glass tanks (900 mm x 350mm plan area) and compacted to a known density and water content typical of field conditions. Using electrodes inserted into the soil, a direct current was passed across the soil under different voltage gradients of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 V/cm for periods of 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14 days. After electrokinetic processing, soil were tested for volume change properties using soil reactivity indicators such as consistency limits, linear shrinkage, free swell index and shrink-swell index. The test results show that with electrokinetic treatments, the volume change potentials of the experimental soils reduced to a greater or lesser degree depending on the magnitude of the voltage gradient and processing time. Under certain voltage gradients and treatment durations, some experimental soils transformed from extremely reactive status to a slightly or almost non-reactive status. The experimental results suggest the potential of developing electrokinetic treatment technique to stabilise volume change properties of expansive soils effectively and efficiently.

- Description: This study examines the drivers of reputation formation for mining companies and the mining industry’s perception of the drivers of reputation formation for its stakeholders’. Building on past research in stakeholder theory, corporate reputation and corporate citizenship, I argue that companies need to manage the reputations of each of their stakeholder groups. I further argue that for companies to successfully manage their reputations an understanding of the interrelationships between the various reputations held by stakeholders is required. Moreover, I argue that industry reputations, especially in the case of the mining industry, are important in the formation of corporate reputations. This paper reports on an ongoing exploratory research program which aims to develop an understanding of the relationships between mining companies and their stakeholders, and the importance of corporate citizenship polices to reputation and hence to corporate sustainability. The findings of the first stage of this research, the results of a Delphi study into the drivers of reputation for mining companies are reported. This study was undertaken to provide an understanding of the drivers of reputation for a number of stakeholder groups and the perceptions held by mining companies of these drivers for their stakeholder groups. Results indicate that drivers vary between stakeholder groups, that in the case of drivers common to a number of stakeholder groups they may vary in their importance across groups, and that there may exist a divergence between industry’s perception and stakeholder priorities. These results further the understanding of the relationship between corporate citizenship and reputation in the mining industry, thus assisting companies to strategically manage their corporate citizenship investments and to understand the process of innovation to meet the changing expectations of stakeholders.

- Description: It is evident that there are numerous conceptions of what constitutes technology in the primary classroom, and yet a shared understanding of the subject area is crucial for the productive development of the discipline. In this study, pre-service teachers reflected on a new method of teaching technology that provides for a shared conceptualisation of the Key Learning Area. It is apparent that such a structure may allow for meaningful and shared insights into technological practice and provide a possible basis for structuring technology education courses, particularly for those students unfamiliar with the subject. This research is significant in that it examines a pedagogical method that has, until now, not been utilised in such pre-service courses, and addresses some of the major concerns being voiced in the subject area.

- Description: Universities are challenged to seek methods to improve student learning. Leading edge technologies, such as podcasts, that put the focus on learner-chosen activities may be one way to accomplish this. This study explored student perceptions of podcasting as a learning and teaching tool in a first semester information systems course within an Australian university. Students were provided with a short podcast to supplement face-to-face lectures. Students were then surveyed to determine their perceptions of the impact of this podcast on their learning. A high number of respondents agreed that they used the podcast, that it increased their understanding of the lecture material and that it assisted their learning in the unit overall. The findings in this preliminary study lend support to the concept that podcasting can enhance learning when used as a supplement to traditional teaching methods.

- Description: With shallow semantic parsing tasks receiving more attention in many natural language applications, there is a need for labelled corpora for learning the specific tags under consideration. In this paper, we discuss a two-step semantic class and semantic role assignment based on the FrameNet elements over a subset of the AQUAINT collection with a reasonable coverage over the semantic frames in FrameNet. The quality of the annotation task is examined through inter-annotator agreement. The methodology described in this work for measuring inter-annotator agreement can be adapted for similar tasks. Some central aspects of the task are also detailed in this paper.

- Description: Opinion detection research relies on labeled documents for training data, either by assumptions based on the document's origin or by using human assessors to categorise the documents. In recent years, blogs have become a source for opinion identification research (TREC Blog06). This study analyses the part-of-speech proportion and the words used within various corpora, determining key differences and similarities useful when preparing for opinion identification research. The resulting comparisons between the characteristics of the various corpora is detailed and discussed. In particular, opinion bearing and non opinion Blog06 documents were found to display a high level of similarity, indicating that blog documents assessed at the document level cannot be used as training data in opinion identification research.

- Description: In this paper, we will present a new approach of using link information to improve the accuracy and efficiency of web classification. However, different from others, we only use the mappings between linked documents and their own class or classes. In this case, we only need to add a few features called linked-class features into the datasets. We apply SVM and BoosTexter for classification. We show that the classification accuracy can be improved based on mixtures of ordinary word features and out-linked-class features. We analyze and discuss the reason of this improvement.

- Description: This paper reports on insights into students' understanding of the concept of rate of change, provided by examining the gestures made, by 25 Year 10 students, in video-recorded interviews. Detailed analysis, of both the sounds and images, illuminates the meaning of rate-related gestures. Findings indicate that students often use the symbols and metaphors of gesture to complement, supplement, or even contradict verbal descriptions. Many students demonstrated, by the combination of their words and gestures, a sound qualitative understanding of constant rate, with a few attempting to quantify rate. This interpretation of gestures may provide teachers with a better understanding of the progress in their students' thinking.

- Description: The relatively new field of stream mining has necessitated the development of robust drift-aware algorithms that provide accurate, real time, data handling capabilities. Tools are needed to assess and diagnose important trends and investigate drift evolution parameters. In this paper, we present two new and novel visualisation techniques, Pixie and Luna graphs, which incorporate salient group statistics coupled with intuitive visual representations of multidimensional groupings over time. Through the novel representations presented here, spatial interactions between temporal divisions can be diagnosed and overall distribution patterns identified. It provides a means of evaluating in non-constrained capacity, commonly constrained evolutionary problems.

- Description: This paper explores the author’s transition from university lecturing and course coordination to secondary teaching and curriculum leadership: a return and also a taboo. It draws on the personal experience of the author and also on her recent doctoral work around teacher development of a disposition for enquiry into professional practice (Reid & O’Donoghue, 2001) and ‘care-full research’ (Brown, 2006). Preparing beginning teachers to enquire into practice is one thing; introducing experienced teachers to the concept will pose different issues. While it is very early days of transition, the paper will be an autoethnography which makes use of narrative methods of enquiry to explore the terrain of returning to secondary school teaching and working with experienced teachers to build a culture of professional learning. The paper connects the concept of ‘care-full’ research (an analytical framework developed in the doctoral work) and ‘care-full’ teaching. It will be argued that the need for care in research of and with teachers, should be developed into a more sophisticated disposition of care for pedagogy, content knowledge and people within the teaching profession. In this way the myth that higher degree research has little impact on school classroom practice will be explored. The totems are my beliefs about teaching and learning and professional practice. The taboos are my actions (moving from tertiary to secondary teaching) and this fits with the concept of risk taking within teaching.

- Description: Women who have a cognitive impairment (CI) (including mental illness, dementia, intellectual disability and acquired brain injury) are particularly vulnerable to sexual assault, yet very few assaults are reported to police. Once reported very few cases find their way through the justice system. The discourse of stereotyping and its impact on access to justice for victim/survivors is central to this research project which examines the uptake and exit stages of reports of sexual assault by persons with a cognitive impairment to police in Victoria, Australia. Data collection involves focus group interviews, analysis of police records of reports of sexual assault by persons with a cognitive impairment across a finite period of time (2002-2004) and one in-depth case study of a victim of rape with a cognitive impairment who successfully accessed the legal system to a completed trial. This paper discusses the results of preliminary analysis of data collected from focus group discussions held across Victoria including rural, regional and metropolitan locations with police, sexual assault counsellors and advocates for sexual assault victims with a CI. Data have been analysed using a modified Grounded Theory framework and ‘interpretative repertoire’ analysis. These methods of analysis have been used to identify commonly held perceptions of sexual assault victims who have cognitive impairments. Early findings indicate that police and advocates alike, draw on commonly held stereotypes about victims with cognitive impairments. These include whether their word can be believed and assumptions that ‘they cannot stand up to the rigors of the justice system’. Potentially these views have a significant effect on the depth and quality of service the victims receive from their advocate as well as the continued pathway of the report through the justice system.
