In order to save time and cost, many disease gene prediction methods have been proposed in recent years. However, the traditional network model uses a binary relationship to represent the relationship between different proteins or gene molecules and phenotypes, which leads to the loss of information. Recently, hypergraph shows that it can overcome this loss of information to some extent and preserve the multivariate relationship, so we transformed the disease gene prediction problem into the problem of ranking the multivariate-relationship object. In this paper, we propose a method of Heterogeneous Probabilistic Hypergraph Ranking (HPHR) to predict disease genes. Firstly, fix a graph centroid for each hyperedge and according to different associations, and add other nodes related to the graph centroid to hyperedges with a certain probability. Then transform the problem of predicting disease genes into the problem of ranking heterogeneous objects, and the candidate genes are sorted by hypergraph ranking. The method is then applied to the integrated disease gene network. Compared with other prediction methods achieved better results, which was verified by this experiment.

An effective relationship between business processes and their relevant strategies helps enterprises achieve their goals. As a business organisation changes quickly, business processes implement their relevant business operations for efficiency. It is important to know which business process achieves which business strategies dynamically. To the best of our knowledge, there exists a framework which aims to automatically determine the strategy-process relationship (Morrison et al. 2011). However, this framework can only work when the effect of the business process is known, but it is difficult to determine such effect accurately. Moreover, by optimising business processes to satisfy business strategies, higher efficiency may be achieved but there is a high chance of losing discriminative information. It therefore creates certain level of uncertainty in achieving accurate strategy-process relationship. To reduce this uncertainty and determine the relationship accurately between business processes and their relevant strategies as defined by business domain experts, in this paper, we introduce a rule-based inference model. This model not only helps business organisations realize which business processes need to be involved for the organisation to achieve their goals when strategies are made, but also reduces the possibility of losing important details from business process optimisation. We have developed a business case to validate our proposed model and the results show that our model can infer the relation accurately for each rule defined for the related business case.

Sampling protocols that are designed to suit the mineralisation style will result in a reduction of the nugget effect and hence resource risk. The a priori need for all sampling programs is the effective characterisation of the mineralisation type(s) to support optimisation. This requires a program of sampling for sampling followed by holistic characterisation. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for coarse nuggety mineralisation. Many deposits contain a proportion of both particle size types. The proportion and size of coarse gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling, where coarser particles will require larger samples and more specialised protocols. The nature of mineralisation geology/mineralogy and associated gold particle sizing can only be determined by sampling to facilitate optimised protocols. Mineralogical studies, focusing on particle size, particle clustering and distribution in host minerals, are required as part of wider paragenetic and metallurgical investigations. This paper discusses the role of mineralogical studies in the characterisation of gold ores for sampling optimisation through a series of case studies.

Grade control programs aim to deliver economic tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. The foundation of a successful program is high quality sampling supported by geology and a suitable data management and modelling system. Underground sampling methods include chip, channel and panel samples; grab/muck pile samples; and drill-based samples. Grade control strategy is related to mining method and orebody type. Sampling protocols must be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. Holistic studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required for sample collection and preparation protocol optimisation through 'Theory of Sampling' application. Where possible, such programs should be undertaken early in the life of a project. Appropriate assaying procedures are also required. Program implementation will require suitably skilled individuals to train and mentor staff, with ongoing Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) monitoring and review will allow protocols and staff to be updated as required.

This paper describes an ALTC (Australian Learning and Teaching Council) funded project, which addresses the development of students‟ report writing skills in science and engineering across the undergraduate years. The WRiSE project grew out of concerns about student performance in written assessments, as well as the need to improve graduate writing emphasised by employers and government. The project approach involved a collaborative team across two institutions. The team comprised language and learning specialists and discipline staff who developed learning materials and technical and eLearning specialists who converted these into online materials. Development followed a feedback spiral, which also involved student users. WRiSE is an integrated, freely available, student centred, online learning environment for report writing in nine discipline areas within science and engineering. In each discipline area, interactive learning materials have been developed to address both the product and process of report writing, as well as the concepts and content behind the reports students have to write. WRiSE is designed to meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds who have had varying writing experiences as it can be accessed according to student needs. Evaluation of WRiSE has been positive in the areas of user friendliness and improved understanding and confidence in report writing. Those students who used WRiSE have attained significantly higher grades in their reports than students who did not use WRiSE.

This paper considers the privacy issues in the intelligent transportation system, in which the data is largely communicated based upon vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle protocols. The sensory data communicated by the vehicles contain sensitive information, such as location and speed, which could violate the driver's privacy if they are leaked with no perturbation. Recent studies suggested mechanisms for randomizing the stream of vehicular data to ensure individuals' privacy. Although the past works on differential privacy provide a strong privacy guarantee, they are limited to applications where communication parties are trusted and/or data is limited to a few types. In this paper, we address this gap by proposing a differentially private mechanism that adds noise in the user side rather than the server. Also, our mechanism is able to perturb various types of data as pointed out by the dedicated short-range communication protocols in the automotive industry. The proposed mechanism is data adaptive and scales the noise with respect to the data type and distribution. Our extensive experiments show the accuracy of our mechanism compared to the recent approaches.

Recent technological developments have seen increasing numbers of mobile digital devices being used in schools, and the advent of these has opened new possibilities for supporting science learning. This paper reports outcomes from primary students’ use of apps as digital scaffolds for self-regulated learning, in a ‘Forms of Energy’ inquiry. Results identified design features of the apps that were effective in supporting students’ organisation and procedural knowledge, but found limitations to how well they could support conceptual understanding. Outcomes highlight the importance of human factors in optimising learning benefits from using apps in science, and underpin the importance of teachers’ conceptual knowledge to students’ science learning. A prominent family of CPSs are networked control systems in which the control and feedback signals are carried over computer networks like the Internet. Communication over insecure networks make system vulnerable to cyber attacks. In this article, we design an intrusion detection and compensation framework based on system/plant identification to fight covert attacks. We collect error statistics of the output estimation during the learning phase of system operation and after that, monitor the system behavior to see if it significantly deviates from the expected outputs. A compensating controller is further designed to intervene and replace the classic controller once the attack is detected. The proposed model is tested on a DC motor as the plant and is put against a deception signal amplification attack over the forward link. Simulation results show that the detection algorithm well detects the intrusion and the compensator is also successful in alleviating the attack effects.

Image segmentation is a feverish issue as it is a challenging job and most digital imaging applications require it as a preprocessing step. Among various algorithms, although split and merge (SM) algorithm is highly lucrative because of its simplicity and effectiveness in segmenting homogeneous regions, however, it is unable to segment all types of objects in an image using a general framework due to not most natural objects being homogeneous. Addressing this issue, a new algorithm namely object segmentation based on split and merge algorithm (OSSM) is proposed in this paper considering image feature stability, inter- and intra-object variability, and human visual perception. The qualitative analysis has been conducted and the segmentation results are compared with the basic SM algorithm and a shape-based fuzzy clustering algorithm namely object based image segmentation using fuzzy clustering (OSF). The OSSM algorithm outperforms both the SM and the OSF algorithms and hence increases the application area of segmentation algorithms.

The purpose of this paper is to provide greater insight into environmental accountability and disclosure from a functionalist perspective. Discussion of the utility of information supplied by corporations to discharge accountability is dependent on societal attitudes to the function of the corporation in society, corporate environmental responsibility and the issue of economic growth. Similarly, the usefulness of environmental information is predicated on perceptions of society as to the importance of environmental issues. The polarisation and politicisation of opinion regarding global warming denies scientific evidence and compounds issues of accountability and disclosure. A postal questionnaire was used to determine societal attitudes to key aspects of corporate functionality, accountability and disclosure. Questionnaire participants were drawn from three categories of society; shareholders, environmentalists and shareholder / environmentalists. Results indicate that the majority of respondents believe the function of the corporation in society is economic and social but there is a significant difference between shareholders and the other user groups. The preferred option of respondents regarding environmental accountability is for companies to be in advance of law and opinion. The sustainable development position, described a continuum, is supported by the shareholder and shareholder/environmentalist groups. The survey research method adopted in this paper suffers from the stated perceptions of respondents rather than attempting to reveal attitudes via alternative approaches. This study demonstrates that there is an attitudinal change towards corporate responsibility that will necessitate re-evaluation of corporate disclosure and accountability.

This paper presents experimental investigation of nano power generation, less than 1 kW size, using Thermoelectric Generator (TEG). The heat source is expected from waste temperature of incinerator, but in the laboratory experimental it was from electric heat source controlled by electronics device. A prototype of 0.02 kW system, comprising 24 modules of TEG bismuth telluride type connected in series, was built. The system is attached with cooling and temperature control to investigate the characteristics. Preliminary experiments and analytical models of electric output power as function of specific temperature were presented. An optimum output power could be set at a certain condition.

Excessive surface hardness and high rotational traction are two factors linked to non-contact injury risk in football. Soil moisture has the greatest influence on surface hardness. However, irrigation was prohibited on the majority of sports grounds during the recent drought in Australia, leading to the closure of many grounds for safety reasons. In the absence of irrigation, this study investigated alternative agronomic strategies to moderate hardness. Turfgrass coverage prevented excessive hardness even on a drought-affected, compacted native soil profile, and the conclusion was that turf managers should select turfgrass species that best sustain full grass coverage. Without irrigation in southern mainland Australia, only a C4 grass such as bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon and hybrids) could do that. However, epidemiological research in Australian football had concluded there was a higher risk of knee injury on bermudagrass compared with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), which was attributed to bermudagrass having a higher rotational traction. In replicated plots in this study, bermudagrass actually had significantly lower rotational stiffness than perennial ryegrass on four out of eight assessment dates, and the mean rotational stiffness of bermudagrass was never higher than that of perennial ryegrass at any assessment. There appeared no reason to recommend against the use of bermudagrass on the basis of rotational traction. In fact, there were greater differences in rotational traction due to other agronomic factors, especially variation in grass cover. Once again, the study concluded that turf managers should select the turfgrass species that best sustains full grass cover over the whole ground and through the whole season.
