Microencapsulation of omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseed oil in flaxseed protein and flaxseed gum based matrix

- Description: The overarching goal of this research was to develop microencapsulated flaxseed oil as a plant based source of omega-3 fatty acids. To accomplish this, flaxseed oil was microencapsulated in a novel matrix composed of flaxseed protein isolate (FPI) and flaxseed gum (FG) and converted into a powder by freeze drying and spray drying. The primary objectives were: a) To evaluate the physicochemical and functional properties of FPI and FG; b) to optimise the process of complex coacervation between FPI and FG to maximise the yield of complex coacervates; c) to characterise the flaxseed oil microcapsules obtained through complex coacervation followed by freeze drying or spray drying. FPI and FG were extracted from whole flaxseeds at optimised temperatures to obtain 90% purity. The physicochemical and functional properties of FPI were found superior to most of the commonly used proteins. Lower extraction temperatures (30, 50 °C) of FG yielded higher levels of neutral monosaccharides and lower levels of acidic monosaccharides. The functional properties of FG, such as EAI and WAC, were negatively affected by the rise in extraction temperature. Electrostatic complexation studies between these two biopolymers showed that the optimum FPI-to-FG ratio is 3:1 and the optimum pH is 3.1. The complex coacervates of FPI-FG were used to microencapsulate flaxseed oil at different core to wall ratios (1:2, 1:3 and 1:4), and converted to powder through spray drying and freeze drying. The spray dried solid microcapsules had higher oil microencapsulation efficiency, lower surface oil content and higher oxidation stability compared to the freeze dried microcapsules. The oxidation stability obtained from spray dried microcapsules at core-to-wall ratio of 1:4 was nearly double to that of the unencapsulated flaxseed oil. This study affirms the potential of a solely plant based encapsulating matrix that returns superior nutritional outcomes to other commonly used wall materials.

A framework for adoption decision process for blockchain technology - an institutional and actor-network theory perspective

It provides several novel technological features like transparency, disintermediation, immutability, trust among stakeholders and decentralisation. Despite so many advantages, the overview of challenges around blockchain adoption has revealed that there is a scarcity of understanding about the process of blockchain adoption decisions. Several organisations have failed to take advantage of blockchain's potential due to uneven adoption across industries and regions. Whether to use blockchain in their business is a difficult decision for many organisations. To fill this gap, this study examined the adoption decision process of blockchain in organisations. Firstly, there is a need of framework that details the steps in the blockchain adoption decision process, including tasks involved and the rationales for the actions taken. This understanding will help the potential adopters to make a successful decision to adopt blockchain technology for their organisation. Secondly, very few studies have examined the factors that influence the stakeholders’ interactions and dynamics while making technology adoption decisions, especially in blockchain based applications. When systems are designed to protect privacy or obscure actors intentionally, such as blockchain platforms, it can be challenging to identify them and understand their roles. Blockchain being an inter-organisational technology, primarily depends on the involvement of internal and external stakeholders. Thus, this study explored the actors involved in the adoption decision process and their roles while aligning other actors towards blockchain adoption. Thirdly, as these actors act as stakeholders while making decision, they act as rational individuals. Therefore, this study also explored their rationales while they are involved in technology adoption decisions to have an effective outcome of the decision-making process. To achieve these objectives, this study utilises Innovation Translation approach derived from Actor-Network Theory and Institutional Theory for technology adoption. The study has utilised a three- round qualitative Delphi method through semi structured interviews to gather views from a panel of experts from organisations who have experienced the blockchain adoption decision process for their business. The targeted experts for this study were categorized as Adopters, Non-Adopters (dropped the idea) and Consultants using selective purposive sampling. The first two rounds were exploratory in nature, and to extend the validity of the responses gathered, the final round was a confirmatory round of interviews. For this study, the saturation was seen with ten experts in the panel for round 2 and round 3. For the pilot study eight participants agreed to be part of the panel. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis in the NVivo tool. The analysis confirmed the use of Innovation Translation approach in literature for understanding the actors and their roles, by giving a rich interpretation of the results in understanding the crucial interactions among the actors and drawing useful findings. The interpretation also provided an insight into the institutionalisation of blockchain by exploring the institutional pressures. The study has confirmed the existence of many pressures that existed for other technologies, remain for blockchain adoption too like hype, curiosity, competitiveness, business value, cost and time but has explored new institutional pressures with blockchain adoption decision process like understanding among consultants and adopting organisations, and process participations needs. Utilising Institutional Theory for blockchain technology has also revealed a fourth pressure that is exerted by the technology itself like maturity, consensus, network dominancy and technological features that are primarily seen as blockchain being an inter-organisational and a new technology that has not been accepted widely in organisations. Achieving the objectives of this study, the study has proposed a consolidated framework for the blockchain adoption decision process from an exploratory view. The first of its kind in literature, that elaborates on the stages involved in blockchain adoption decision process, identify the actors and explains their role at each stage and how those roles evolve and also provides an insight into the institutionalisation of blockchain by exploring the pressures. These gaps, objectives, method, analysis, and contributions are further discussed in this thesis comprehensively.

Building social capital through the delivery of outdoor education at Victorian government schools

- Description: This thesis describes an explanatory sequential mixed-methods research project that investigated the changes to student social capital indicators resulting from an outdoor educational program, Future Maker, delivered to Victorian government school students. A systematic review of literature found minimal evidence of research relating to the change to social capital indicators as a result of programs that deliver outdoor education curriculum. The initial chapters of this thesis explore research on outdoor residential schools and the development of the Future Maker program as an alternative form of outdoor education curriculum design. Quantitative data were gathered from 287 students in the form of the Life Effectiveness Questionnaire (LEQ), over a 12-month period. Students completed the LEQ on three separate occasions: Day 1 of the program, Day 12 of the program, and 6 months after the program. Furthermore, qualitative data were gathered using a semistructured interview process. Twenty-eight students and seven teachers were randomly selected from participating schools to partake in the interviews. The final sections of the thesis present and discuss the findings from the quantitative and qualitative data that provided sufficient evidence that showed a significant increase in effect size for the social capital indicators of communication, relationships, group processing, networking and leadership. Furthermore, the research indicated that the domestic chores undertaken by students on an outdoor education program contributed to how social capital is learnt in an outdoor educational context. Moreover, the research positions outdoor education as a subject with content and pedagogy rather than a discipline and argues that outdoor education as a standalone subject has been sitting in plain sight. Finally, it concluded that a purpose-designed outdoor education program, which is built using a framework for curriculum development, can develop positive indicators for social capital.

Characterising MAIT cells in human mucosal cancers

- Description: Mucosal associated invariant T cells (MAIT cells) are MR1-restricted T cells that regulate the local immune milieu with cytotoxic and cytokine responses. MAIT cells are well-known for their antimicrobial properties but are also of interest in mucosal cancers, such as colorectal cancer (CRC) and lung cancer (LC). These cancers arise in tissues that provide a barrier to the gut-resident microbiota that can potentially stimulate MAIT cells. Previous studies established that MAIT cells are present within CRC tissues, but there has been contradictory evidence about their significance within these tumour tissues. For example, their cytokine response may promote tumour elimination; however, the high frequencies of MAIT cells within CRC correlate with poor prognostic outcomes, suggesting they may be detrimental in these cancers. Despite the interest in MAIT cells within these tumours, little is known about their location, activation status and cytokine potential within the neoplastic tissue. Chapter 1 of this project investigated human circulating MAIT cells in both CRC and LC patients, finding a significant reduction in the frequency of circulating MAIT cells in the LC patient cohort. We also investigated the frequency and location of MAIT cells within non-cancerous colorectal tissues, identifying that MAIT cells are frequent in the sub-epithelial dome of gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). In contrast, MAIT cells are frequent in the inflammatory response at the tumour margin in CRC tissues. Chapter 2 of this project investigated MAIT cell activation within the CRC tumour environment, with CD25 analysis identifying that MAIT cells appeared to be selectively activated within CRC tissue. We then sought to identify which cells within CRC tissue can present the cognate MAIT cell antigen, finding that CRC cells can take up soluble antigen, upregulate MR1 to the cell surface, and activate MAIT cells. However, these experiments identified a yet to be characterised soluble product secreted by CRC cells that appears to suppress MAIT cell TNF expression after encountering antigen. Chapter 3 of this project investigated MAIT cell responses after chronic (> 2 weeks) stimulation via TCR signalling, a condition likely to be found in both CRC tissue and pre-cancerous lesions, as these lesions are associated with mucosal barrier defects that allow microbes within the gut lumen to transit the barrier. These investigations found a novel, mixed Th1/Th2 cytokine response that included prodigious IL-13 expression. We found that the IL-13 produced by chronically stimulated MAIT cells was sufficient to signal to CRC cells and induce CRC cell transcriptional changes via the STAT6 pathway. Collectively, the findings of our study have provided new insights about the significance of MAIT cells in CRC and highlighted them as a potential target for immunotherapies to improve anti-tumour immunity in mucosal tissues.

Time experience and judgement in depression : A theory of isomorphic general relativity (TIGR)

- Description: This thesis presents studies assessing aspects of time experience and judgement in depression. It focuses on a phenomenon called time dilation, which is the perception of slow temporal flow in conscious experience. This thesis by publication explains a novel theory of time dilation in depression, called the Theory of Isomorphic General Relativity (TIGR), and elaborates this theory to propose a general framework for consciousness and cognition according to timescale. The final outcome is a dual-pronged theory of time consciousness and the experience of time dilation in depression that has the same form as Einstein’s (1920) general theory of relativity. The thesis begins with a published paper called “Duration perception versus perception duration: A proposed model for the consciously experienced moment” (Kent, 2019). This paper defines temporal flow in conscious experience in terms of an interval of time perception known as the ‘experienced moment’ (Wittmann, 2011). In this paper, I reviewed evidence for a view of time dilation in depression that is distinct from either immediate sensory integration or working memory (WM) activity. The thesis continues with a second published paper called “Time dilation and acceleration in depression” (Kent, Van Doorn, & Klein, 2019) that reviews the literature specific to time perception in depression, and meta-analytically tests the preceding definition of time dilation within the experienced moment. This paper also details the experimental methodology used and proposes the TIGR as a descriptive and explanatory theory of time perception. xx The third published paper, “Bayes, time perception, and relativity: The central role of hopelessness” (Kent, Van Doorn, Hohwy, & Klein, 2019), formulates and tests the TIGR in a time perception experiment using the methodology outlined in the second paper. The time judgement and experience data of 64 participants, with and without sub-clinical symptoms of depression, were analysed using a statistical version of a Bayesian prediction error minimisation framework called ‘distrusting the present’ (Hohwy, Paton, & Palmer, 2016). The results showed that hopelessness was associated with slower time experience, while arousal was associated with faster time experience. The paper also supported the use of a relative difference equation to model these effects. This relative difference equation has the same general form as a basic general relativity equation used to calculate time dilation due to gravity, called the Schwarzschild metric (Schwarzschild, 1916). The fourth paper, “Time perception in depression: A perceived delay cues feelings of hopelessness” (Kent, Van Doorn, Hohwy, & Klein, under review), is under review by the journal Acta Psychologica. It looks more closely at the experimental effect reported in the third paper to explore the clinical implications of an increase in hopelessness caused by a brief time production task. The analysis showed that a particular sub-factor of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) called ‘feelings of hopelessness’ was more affected than other facets of hopelessness (Beck, Weissman, Lester, & Trexler, 1974). The fifth paper, “Systema temporis: A time-based dimensional framework for consciousness and cognition” (Kent, Van Doorn, & Klein, under review), is currently under review by the journal Consciousness and Cognition. In this paper, we extend elements of the TIGR related to consciousness in the first four papers xxi to argue that time consciousness can be used to systematise aspects of consciousness and cognition. The paper proposes a hierarchical framework that reflects the commonly-conceived structure of memory, intelligence, and emotional intelligence. This framework integrates aspects of consciousness including experience, wakefulness, and self-consciousness. The final paper, submitted to the journal Personality and Social Psychology Review and entitled “Systema psyches: A time-based framework for consciousness, cognition and related psychological and social theories” (Kent, Van Doorn, & Klein, submitted) extends the ‘Systema Temporis’ paper to incorporate extended timeframes and theories of social cognition including personality, cognitive and moral development, and personal values. The analysis suggests that time consciousness is also a facet of collective experience and so, in framing the closing discussion around time dilation in depression, the thesis concludes that the TIGR extends beyond the narrow domain of individual psychopathology to incorporate timescales of collective memory and human evolution.

The time judgement and experience data of 64 participants, with and without sub-clinical symptoms of depression, were analysed using a statistical version of a Bayesian prediction error minimisation framework called ‘distrusting the present’ (Hohwy, Paton, & Palmer, 2016). The results showed that hopelessness was associated with slower time experience, while arousal was associated with faster time experience. The paper also supported the use of a relative difference equation to model these effects. This relative difference equation has the same general form as a basic general relativity equation used to calculate time dilation due to gravity, called the Schwarzschild metric (Schwarzschild, 1916). The fourth paper, “Time perception in depression: A perceived delay cues feelings of hopelessness” (Kent, Van Doorn, Hohwy, & Klein, under review), is under review by the journal Acta Psychologica. It looks more closely at the experimental effect reported in the third paper to explore the clinical implications of an increase in hopelessness caused by a brief time production task. The analysis showed that a particular sub-factor of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) called ‘feelings of hopelessness’ was more affected than other facets of hopelessness (Beck, Weissman, Lester, & Trexler, 1974). The fifth paper, “Systema temporis: A time-based dimensional framework for consciousness and cognition” (Kent, Van Doorn, & Klein, under review), is currently under review by the journal Consciousness and Cognition. In this paper, we extend elements of the TIGR related to consciousness in the first four papers xxi to argue that time consciousness can be used to systematise aspects of consciousness and cognition. The paper proposes a hierarchical framework that reflects the commonly-conceived structure of memory, intelligence, and emotional intelligence. This framework integrates aspects of consciousness including experience, wakefulness, and self-consciousness. The final paper, submitted to the journal Personality and Social Psychology Review and entitled “Systema psyches: A time-based framework for consciousness, cognition and related psychological and social theories” (Kent, Van Doorn, & Klein, submitted) extends the ‘Systema Temporis’ paper to incorporate extended timeframes and theories of social cognition including personality, cognitive and moral development, and personal values. The analysis suggests that time consciousness is also a facet of collective experience and so, in framing the closing discussion around time dilation in depression, the thesis concludes that the TIGR extends beyond the narrow domain of individual psychopathology to incorporate timescales of collective memory and human evolution.

Robust Mobile Malware Detection

- Description: The increasing popularity and use of smartphones and hand-held devices have made them the most popular target for malware attackers. Researchers have proposed machine learning-based models to automatically detect malware attacks on these devices. Since these models learn application behaviors solely from the extracted features, choosing an appropriate and meaningful feature set is one of the most crucial steps for designing an effective mobile malware detection system. There are four categories of features for mobile applications. Previous works have taken arbitrary combinations of these categories to design models, resulting in sub-optimal performance. This thesis systematically investigates the individual impact of these feature categories on mobile malware detection systems. Feature categories that complement each other are investigated and categories that add redundancy to the feature space (thereby degrading the performance) are analyzed. In the process, the combination of feature categories that provides the best detection results is identified. Ensuring reliability and robustness of the above-mentioned malware detection systems is of utmost importance as newer techniques to break down such systems continue to surface. Adversarial attack is one such evasive attack that can bypass a detection system by carefully morphing a malicious sample even though the sample was originally correctly identified by the same system. Self-crafted adversarial samples can be used to retrain a model to defend against such attacks. However, randomly using too many such samples, as is currently done in the literature, can further degrade detection performance. This work proposed two intelligent approaches to retrain a classifier through the intelligent selection of adversarial samples. The first approach adopts a distance-based scheme where the samples are chosen based on their distance from malware and benign cluster centers while the second selects the samples based on a probability measure derived from a kernel-based learning method. The second method achieved a 6% improvement in terms of accuracy. To ensure practical deployment of malware detection systems, it is necessary to keep the real-world data characteristics in mind. For example, the benign applications deployed in the market greatly outnumber malware applications. However, most studies have assumed a balanced data distribution. Also, techniques to handle imbalanced data in other domains cannot be applied directly to mobile malware detection since they generate synthetic samples with broken functionality, making them invalid. In this regard, this thesis introduces a novel synthetic over-sampling technique that ensures valid sample generation. This technique is subsequently combined with a dynamic cost function in the learning scheme that automatically adjusts minority class weight during model training which counters the bias towards the majority class and stabilizes the model. This hybrid method provided a 9% improvement in terms of F1-score. Aiming to design a robust malware detection system, this thesis extensively studies machine learning-based mobile malware detection in terms of best feature category combination, resilience against evasive attacks, and practical deployment of detection models. Given the increasing technological advancements in mobile and hand-held devices, this study will be very useful for designing robust cybersecurity systems to ensure safe usage of these devices.

There are many Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs), which are proposed to identify abnormal activities, but most of these IDSs produce a large number of false positives and low detection accuracy. Hence, a significant quantity of false positives could generate a high-level of alerts in a short period of time as the normal activities are classified as intrusion activities. This thesis proposes a novel framework of hybrid intrusion detection system that integrates the Signature Intrusion Detection System (SIDS) with the Anomaly Intrusion Detection System (AIDS) to detect zero-day attacks with high accuracy. SIDS has been used to identify previously known intrusions, and AIDS has been applied to detect unknown zero-day intrusions. The goal of this research is to combine the strengths of each technique toward the development of a hybrid framework for the efficient intrusion detection system. A number of performance measures including accuracy, F-measure and area under ROC curve have been used to evaluate the efficacy of our proposed models and to compare and contrast with existing approaches. Extensive simulation results conducted in this thesis show that the proposed framework is capable of yielding excellent detection performance when tested with a number of widely used benchmark datasets in the intrusion detection system domain. Experiments show that the proposed hybrid IDS provides higher detection rate and lower false-positive rate in detecting intrusions as compared to the SIDS and AIDS techniques individually.

Barriers and enablers to women's access to services during childbearing in Timor-Leste

Care from SBA is the international benchmark for quality maternity care. Purpose: Determine the barriers and enablers to women's access to services during childbearing in Timor-Leste, including women’s expectations and needs. Methodology: Qualitative research using focused ethnography, data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, focus groups and participant observation. Seventeen stakeholders and thirty women from three districts in Timor-Leste participated. Thematic analysis and coding of data with triangulation of the findings between separate participant groups. Results: Barriers to woman’s access to SBA include poor roads, lack of transport, costs associated with accessing SBA, lack of availability and poor quality services. Lack of privacy, multiple care-givers and poor interpersonal communication from SBA were also noted. Stakeholders emphasise health promotion and antenatal care to counteract the influence of traditional beliefs and promote demand for SBA. Many women demonstrate their agency in health seeking behaviours and choices for care during pregnancy and childbirth. Discussion: Women understand that pregnancy and childbirth poses potential risks to their health. Rural women, women from low socio-economic and other marginalised groups have less access to services. Perceptions of poor quality services also reduce women’s demand. Conclusion: Barriers and enablers to woman’s access to services are identified using an amended AAAQ framework introducing the domain of Antecedents in addition to domains of Access, Availability, Acceptability and Quality (AAAQA). Further expenditure on health service infrastructure, staff training and community outreach will improve access and quality SBA. It argues that Ballarat's Asylum progressively developed and expanded upon a model of organised poor relief practiced among the industrial classes in England, in consequence of the perceived need for rapid capital expansion in Australia, and knowledge of the dangers associated with mining, building construction, and other manual work. The introduction of a secular education system in Victoria, together with enthusiasm among producers for technological innovation and skill development, led to changes in the nature and conditions of paid work, as well as to a push among workers and their sympathizers for greater appreciation of past contributions by older workers and the needs of the ill and/or incapacitated. This push was only partially addressed by the Victorian government in 1901 when it introduced the old-age pension."

Head, neck, and facial injuries in Australian cricket

- Description: Head, neck and facial (HNF) injuries are a significant concern in cricket due to the nature of the game and the potential impact of fast-moving balls and collisions. These types of injuries occur as a result of direct hits from the cricket ball, accidental collisions between players or falls during fielding or batting. HNF injuries can range from minor cuts and bruises to more severe concussions, fractures, or dental trauma. While some HNF injuries in cricket can be career-ending and severe, others may not be as catastrophic. Over the past decade, there has been a noticeable increase in the incidence of HNF injuries in elite-level cricket, and the tragic death of an Australian test cricketer in 2014 from a head injury heightened awareness of the seriousness and potential fatality of such injuries in the sport. To mitigate the risk of serious injuries, cricket players are encouraged to wear protective equipment such as helmets and neck guards. At the elite level of the sport, stringent safety protocols and regulations are enforced to prioritise player wellbeing, ensuring that immediate medical attention is available during training or games. Further, routine injury surveillance at the elite level has proven effective in monitoring and reducing the likelihood of serious HNF injuries. Nevertheless, there is a noticeable lack of research investigating HNF injuries among cricket participants, particularly at the community level. This lack of reporting hampers the identification and implementation of effective strategies to minimise the risk of such injuries. This thesis seeks to bridge this research gap by examining HNF injuries in community-level cricket under two broad objectives, providing valuable insights for injury prevention and risk mitigation strategies. The first objective of this thesis was to develop a comprehensive understanding of HNF cricket injury epidemiology and the reporting of helmet usage. A systematic review was conducted, analysing 29 studies to determine the incidence, nature, and mechanisms of HNF injuries in cricket, the reported use of helmets and ‘gold standard’ definitions. Facial fractures and concussions were the most frequently specified types of injuries, and the impact of the ball was reported as the most common mechanism for sustaining HNF injuries in cricket. Only three studies (10%) reported the use of helmets. The systematic review highlighted the lack of evidence regarding the reporting of HNF cricket injuries according to international cricket consensus injury definitions, as well as the limited data on helmet usage at the time of injury. Additionally, the review identified gaps in evidence concerning HNF injuries across different age groups, levels of play and diverse populations, along with discrepancies in reporting injury-specific mechanisms. Community-level HNF cricket injuries that required hospitalisation in Victoria, Australia, over a decade, spanning from 2007/8 to 2016/17 were also reviewed under the first objective. During this period, Victorian hospitals treated 3,907 HNF cricket injuries. Male participants accounted for a higher number of injuries than female participants, and the age group most commonly requiring hospital treatment was 10–14 years. Open wounds were the most frequent type of injury (30%), and the primary mechanism for HNF cricket injuries during this decade was being hit, struck, or crushed (86%). Our literature review and the hospital study form the ideal platform for injury prevention efforts by establishing HNF injury prevalence and common injury mechanisms. The second broad objective of this thesis was to investigate the use of cricket helmets among cricket participants, to study the ability of Australian cricket participants to perceive injury risk and to explore the knowledge and awareness of concussion assessment and management. An online survey was conducted to address each facet of our second objective. Over 90% of the players and 50% of the officials reported wearing a helmet during the 2018/19 cricket season, but most did not use a neck protector. Most of the helmets used met the recommended British Standards, and the most common brand used was Masuri. For most of the players and officials who participated in our survey, comfort, and ability to prevent HNF injuries were the two most important factors affecting their decision to purchase a cricket helmet. More than 80% of players and almost 50% of officials expressed the belief that helmets were not necessary for activities such as bowling and fielding at a distance from the batter. Yet, the fact that more than 80% of all participants expressed their willingness to keep using helmets under compulsory regulations indicates that implementing mandatory helmet rules might result in a significant increase in helmet adoption and enhance the overall safety of the sport. Over 70% of our survey participants demonstrated satisfactory levels of knowledge regarding concussion assessment and management. These findings suggest that the potential for severe complications stemming from concussions related to cricket could be reduced, particularly in light of the limited availability of qualified medical professionals at the community-level. The strong understanding of concussion guidelines among our survey participants implies that they would be inclined to prioritise safety and choose helmets that align with the recommended safety standards. In summary, this PhD research has achieved its objective of making the first large-scale scientific contribution to enhance safety and prevent HNF injuries among participants of community-level cricket in Australia. Additionally, this research effectively assessed the participants’ knowledge, comprehension and attitudes regarding utilising protective helmets and the importance of following Cricket Australia’s concussion guidelines.

- Description: Head, neck and facial (HNF) injuries are a significant concern in cricket due to the nature of the game and the potential impact of fast-moving balls and collisions. These types of injuries occur as a result of direct hits from the cricket ball, accidental collisions between players or falls during fielding or batting. HNF injuries can range from minor cuts and bruises to more severe concussions, fractures, or dental trauma. While some HNF injuries in cricket can be career-ending and severe, others may not be as catastrophic. Over the past decade, there has been a noticeable increase in the incidence of HNF injuries in elite-level cricket, and the tragic death of an Australian test cricketer in 2014 from a head injury heightened awareness of the seriousness and potential fatality of such injuries in the sport. To mitigate the risk of serious injuries, cricket players are encouraged to wear protective equipment such as helmets and neck guards. At the elite level of the sport, stringent safety protocols and regulations are enforced to prioritise player wellbeing, ensuring that immediate medical attention is available during training or games. Further, routine injury surveillance at the elite level has proven effective in monitoring and reducing the likelihood of serious HNF injuries. Nevertheless, there is a noticeable lack of research investigating HNF injuries among cricket participants, particularly at the community level. This lack of reporting hampers the identification and implementation of effective strategies to minimise the risk of such injuries. This thesis seeks to bridge this research gap by examining HNF injuries in community-level cricket under two broad objectives, providing valuable insights for injury prevention and risk mitigation strategies. The first objective of this thesis was to develop a comprehensive understanding of HNF cricket injury epidemiology and the reporting of helmet usage. A systematic review was conducted, analysing 29 studies to determine the incidence, nature, and mechanisms of HNF injuries in cricket, the reported use of helmets and ‘gold standard’ definitions. Facial fractures and concussions were the most frequently specified types of injuries, and the impact of the ball was reported as the most common mechanism for sustaining HNF injuries in cricket. One of the most popular manifestations is the creation and maintenance of social relationships using social and dating websites. Unscrupulous operators have identified its potential for reaching vulnerable people and have started using it as platform for their criminal activity in the form of so-called Online Romance Scams. Quickly, this cybercrime has become very successful and thus an increasing threat in the social networking environment. The Online Romance Scam causes considerable financial and emotional damage to the victims. In this research we introduce a theory which helps to explain the success of this scam. In a similar way to the “The Nigerian Letter”, we propose that the scam techniques appeal to strong emotions, which are clearly involved in Romantic relationships. We also assume that the same success factors of normal relationships contribute to the success of the Romance Scam. Previous research into normal relationships has identified personal “love stories” as an important factor for the development of relationships. We have suggested that these personal love stories will have a key role in fraudulent relationships. The aim of this research is to explore Online Romance Scams as a type of ‘virtual love’ which initially creates happiness for the victim in a virtual romantic relationship, but tragically then causes the victim to be separated from his or her savings. Using narrative research methodology, this research will establish a model of the Romance Scam structure and its variations regarding human romantic attitudes. During the research program, the analysis of publicly available data from the internet were used, and as a consequence of this, appropriate ethical usage of research data is discussed. Findings of this research will contribute to the knowledge of the Online Romance Scam as significant crime, and provide information about the structure and the development of the modus operandi which can be used to identify an online relationship as a scam at an early phase in order to prevent significant harm to the victim.
