Description: After the Great War of 1914-18 social memories were created to assist people to grieve for, honor and remember the dead. Through processes of selection, articulation and rehearsal of information about the war's events, thousands of memorials were created. Increasing numbers of tourists are showing interest in the Great War but may find difficulty in interpreting the memories articulated through the memorials by a previous generation. To accommodate these needs, new memorials have been built which focus on education and new forms of commemoration. This paper uses social memory theory to describe the processes through which tourism can engage in creating and perpetuating the memory of the Great War, and suggests how research can help to better understand tourists' experiences. Description: The focus of this paper is peripheral urban growth centres on the edges of capital cities in Australia and the challenges they face as dormitory suburbs attempting to establish their own local business development. These challenges create dilemmas as infrastructure and climate change place pressure on long commuting times, while developing strong locally based communities is limited by many resource and demand constraints. The main research question is to examine how these challenges are being addressed in both public policy and academic research. Two propositions emerge from this analysis. The first is that, despite clear recognition of these challenges by public policy makers, there is a lack of coherent policy vision in addressing the dilemmas that are facing these urban growth centres. The second is that, despite all the concerns and lack of policy vision, there is a dearth of useful academic research in Australia to understand the dilemmas and provide guidance for appropriate policy options. In the context of ad hoc policy and academic neglect; Casey, Melton and Wyndham are the three major urban peripheral local government areas in Victoria that are profiled in this paper. They serve as examples in examining incoherence of policy and then analysing the elements that are needed for effective and strong peripheral growth centres that could propel these centres towards efficient and equitable liveable communities. A broad composite model of regional economic development is used to examine the attendant problems in these urban centres and the various viable policy options for addressing these problems. In the process, this paper aims to provide a basis for further rigorous academic investigation of peripheral urban growth centres in Australia and, arising from this, more coherent policies for the economic development of such centres. Description: This article examines and explains some of the curriculum and assessment practices that allow for VET in schools (VETiS) programs in the state of Victoria, to be recognised and incorporated into the senior secondary school certificates through the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). It draws on a selection of policy, curriculum, operational and research literature and statistical data on participation to discuss aspects of Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Victorian secondary schools. After setting out the two curriculum frameworks, the article reviews the strategy and processes for the tandem usage of competency-based and scored assessment as they apply in the Victorian context. The purpose of the article is to show the complexities and open up the balancing act that is occurring at the operational and policy levels between equity and quality.

Description: This paper is concerned to re-examine Aboriginal spatial organization in the far northwest region of Victoria from Mildura to the Victorian border with South Australia. RMW Dixon (Working Papers) has noted that there is a multiplicity of names of groups in this region, and their status must be resolved. It does this by examining the primary sources and nineteenth century reconstructions such as Thomas, Goodwin, Smyth, Mathews, and Howitt, and then through a more critical analysis of twentieth century reconstructions such as Tindale. It finds that south of the Murray River and west of Mildura there were two language groups: Keramin (which included Jarijari at Mildura) and Yuyu to their west. Keramin at Mildura claimed country on both sides of the Murray River, however the Yuyu were only on the southern side of the river. The northern side of the Murray River belonged to Marawara, the southernmost dialect of Pakantji. The presence of the Marawara south of the Murray River is considered a post-contact adaptation.

Description: Australia has been one of the countries to most enthusiastically embrace the neo-liberal conditions conducive to the dismantling of equitably provided public schooling. The article argues that part of the explanation for the absence of any effective challenge to this trajectory lies in the contradictory nature of the Australian identity. The ensemble of policies that have been officially promoted to produce this situation, include: an official process of disparaging public education, while eulogising the alleged virtues of private education; promoting school choice as the mechanism for upholding standards and accountability; encouraging structures and school cultures that bolster marketised views; deliberately cultivating inequities in resources and funding that exacerbate exit of a fearful middle class; and generally producing a compliant view of educational leadership that is deferent to management views. Description: Iron-sulfide minerals in benthic sediments may sequester potentially toxic trace elements that are introduced to estuaries from natural and anthropogenic sources (Chapman et al., 1998, Morse and Luther, 1999, Simpson et al., 2002 and Teasdale et al., 2003). Understanding iron-sulfide formation in benthic sediments is therefore central to assessing the risk posed by sedimentary trace elements (Machado et al., 2004, Burton et al., 2005a and Burton et al., 2006a). This report provides a baseline description of sedimentary iron-sulfide and trace element behaviour in Coombabah Lake – a sub-tropical estuarine lake in southern Moreton Bay, Australia (Fig. 1).

Description: This paper reports on research into community-based men's sheds in Australia, focusing on how regular activity in these sheds impacts on the informal learning experiences of the mainly older men who use them. It leads to an exploration and reflection on how men's learning experiences in such sheds might inform adult and vocational education in community contexts for older men in other national and cultural contexts. Shed-based activity in community settings is found to provide a critically important, positive and therapeutic, male-positive context that satisfies a wide range of needs not currently available to older men in more formal education settings or in typical adult learning providers. Men's sheds in community contexts provide an important and voluntary social and community outlet for older retired men, particularly for workin- class men who are less likely than other men and particularly women to participate in adult and community education. The research identifies the likely fruitfulness of more closely examining the role of informal learning in enhancing wellbeing through voluntary participation in community settings in other cultural and national contexts.

Description: This article argues that the, sometimes contentious, behaviour of travellers to Anzac commemorations at Gallipoli represents in part a spiritual phenomenon and a true pilgrimage, indicative of general movements in Australia towards the episodic spiritual and the memorialisation of death. The argument derives from primary participant observation and interviews during Anzac 2000 at Gallipoli and interviews in Australia with a tour operator, a politician who organised the 80th anniversary tour in 1995 and a young man representing his state on this tour. Travel to the Anzac commemoration at Gallipoli fits the paradigm of an ideal type pilgrimage. Patterns of grief and sacrifice and the search for a cultural centre support the notion that it can be seen as truly spiritual. The Gallipoli phenomenon may exemplify a current Australian trend towards re-sacralisation, embodying forms of spirituality beyond the institutional church.

Description: In this paper, researchers investigate the social impact of water restrictions on households in the Ballarat and District Water Supply System. They present a general framework for evaluating the social impact of water restrictions which centres on perceptions of economic circumstances, health and well-being and community character and cohesion. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods, researchers confirm that existing water restrictions are indeed having an impact, although the extent of that impact varies along key dimensions. Researchers also identify underlying drivers of attitudes towards water restrictions, namely the direct impact of water restrictions on the household, and beliefs regarding the equitable application of restrictions across the community. The research findings are significant at a number of levels. At the local level, they provide water resource practitioners and policy makers with systematic data on which to base future water resource decisions and the communication messages and support strategies that accompany such decisions. More broadly, the findings shed light on an issue of critical national importance and they contribute to our theoretical knowledge of its impacts and complexities, and strategies for measurement.

Description: During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Australian women (and Melbournian women in particular) were chastised for extravagance in dress. Excessive expenditure on fashionable clothing was considered a threat to personal solvency and domestic tranquillity. Female profligacy was also deemed self indulgent and unpatriotic in periods of economic and military crisis. Drawing on Zelizer's [Zelizer VA. The social meaning of money. New York: Basic Books; 1994] study of The social meaning of money the paper examines how the state attempted to contain female extravagance in dress by re-orientating spending priorities in household budgets. The earmarking ideology of patriotic thrift was conveyed by apparatuses such as cultural and communications media, the political system and voluntary associations. The earmarking ideology represented an onslaught on fashionable dress, a means of asserting feminine identity in a patriarchal society. The study reveals budgetary earmarking as a social process, which is reflective and constitutive of gendered asymmetries of power in the home.

Description: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to extend the work of Carnegie and Walker and report the results of Part 2 of their study on household accounting in Australia during the period from the 1820s to the 1960s. Design/methodology/ approach - The study adopts a microhistorical approach involving a detailed examination of actual accounting practices in the Australian home based on 18 sets of surviving household records identified as exemplars and supplemented by other sources which permit their contextualisation and interpretation. Findings - The findings point to considerable variety in the accounting practices pursued by individuals and families. Household accounting in Australia was undertaken by both women and men of the middle and landed classes whose surviving household accounts were generally found to comprise one element of diverse and comprehensive personal record keeping systems. The findings indicate points of convergence and divergence in relation to the contemporary prescriptive literature and practice. Originality/value - The paper reflects on the implications of the findings for the notion of the household as a unit of consumption as opposed to production, gender differences in accounting practice and financial responsibility, the relationship between changes in the life course and the commencement and cessation of household accounting, and the relationship between domestic accounting practice and social class. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Description: Purpose - Beyond the public world of work, the home provides an arena for examining accounting and gender in everyday life. This study aims to examine household accounting in Australia from the early nineteenth to around the mid-twentieth century. Design/methodology/approach - The study comprises two parts. The first part, as reported in this paper, presents evidence on household accounting as prescribed in the didactic literature in Australia, and evidence of actual accounting practices based on the examination of 76 sets of surviving Australian household records available in public repositories. The second part adopts a microhistorical approach involving the detailed scrutiny of 18 sets of accounting records and relevant biographical and family data on the household accountants involved. Findings - The study indicates that household accounting was an instrument for restraining female consumption, particularly during times of crises, and that accounting in Australian homes focussed on maintaining records of routine transactions as opposed to the preparation of budgets and financial statements. Household accounting in Australia was performed by women and men. The surviving records examined suggest that while areas of financial responsibility were defined by gender there was little evidence of formalised hierarchical accountability between spouses as has been found to be the case in Britain. Originality/value - The study extends knowledge of household accounting and gender. Most historical investigations on this subject draw on instructional literature. Description: The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of company and executive characteristics in strategic alliance formation in the tourism sector of travel. A survey of Australian travel sector businesses was carried out and the results indicate a high level of interaction through alliances between various sectors of the Australian tourism industry. Top managers' characteristics (experience, ownership and risk-taking attitude) were found to be influential in taking strategic decisions of whether to form alliances or not. These characteristics do not play an important role in determining the number of alliances an organisation has and their geographical location, as much as company characteristics do. The findings of this paper imply that company characteristics are important in determining alliance formation. Managers should thoroughly consider these characteristics when deciding not only to form alliances, but also the types of alliances that could help their organisations to be more competitive, given limited resources.
