Ground hardness and injury in community level Australian football

  • Description: Objective: To describe the risk and details of injuries associated with ground hardness in community level Australian football (AF). Design: Prospective injury surveillance with periodic objective ground hardness measurement. Methods: 112 ground hardness assessments were undertaken using a Clegg hammer at nine locations across 20 grounds, over the 2007 and 2008 AF seasons. Details of 352 injuries sustained by community level players on those grounds were prospectively collected as part of a large randomised controlled trial. The ground location of the injury was matched to the nearest corresponding ground hardness Clegg hammer readings, in gravities (g), which were classified from unacceptably low (<30 g) to unacceptably high hardness (>120 g). Results: Clegg hammer readings ranged from 25 to 301 g. Clegg hammer hardness categories from low/normal to high/normal were associated with the majority of injuries, with only 3.7% (13 injuries) on unacceptably high hardness and 0.3% (1 injury) on the unacceptably low hardness locations. Relative to the preferred range of hardness, the risk of sustaining an injury on low/normal hardness locations was 1.31 (95%CI: 1.06-1.62) times higher and 1.82 (95%CI: 1.17-2.85) times higher on locations with unacceptably high hardness. The more severe injuries occurred with low/normal ground hardness. Conclusions: Despite the low number of injuries, the risk of sustaining an injury on low/normal and unacceptably hard grounds was significantly greater than on the preferred range of hardness. Notably, the severity of the injuries sustained on unacceptably hard grounds was lower than for other categories of hardness. © 2012 Sports Medicine Australia.

  • Description: Online Farm Trials (OFT) (www.farmtrials.com.au) is a free web-based resource and trial discovery system that contains more than 7,100 trials from 76 different organisations from across Australia. Since its inception in 2013, OFT has developed via a collaborative approach with grower groups, research organisations, agricultural experts and grains industry organisations. This ensures the outcomes are highly relevant, practical and beneficial for growers. Users can view, analyse and export grains research data as well as compare trials based upon historical, geographic and crop-specific search filters. Current developments include seasonally relevant collections of trials to highlight priority topics and aid on-farm decision making. Traces of the female self : exploring the documentation of women’s art through traces, impressions, residues and self-portraiture via contemporary art practice

  • Description: Women have always been present as artists, but not necessarily included within the canon of Western art history. Studying the canon is an accepted way of understanding the context of what has gone before, and in turn positioning ourselves within contemporary art practices and theories. However there is a disconnect when most of the individuals within the canon are nothing like us. Self-portraiture can be an embodied methodology, a starting point for an investigation that goes beyond oneself. Addressing the personal through my art practice also addresses a wider community of female artists. Through a studio-based investigation I have asked: What can visual art’s inherent capacity for generating and capturing traces, residues and impressions express in a material and conceptual way to explore self-identity and contribute to the current discourse about women artists’ history? How can these themes be visually expressed in new ways through contemporary selfportraiture, addressing absence and perspective in the documentation of women’s art? I explore these questions through experimental methods of making self-portraits. This research project considers the personal, examining representation of the self as an ontological enquiry into the roles of making and being. As a practice-led study, I pursue this line of enquiry as a means for exploring current structures of power, through a new body of work aimed at further informing Australian women’s art practice and its history.

  • Description: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic, progressive metabolic disease that is an international epidemic. General Practitioners (GPs) are the cornerstones of T2DM management. The aim of this study was to determine the scope of care and management of patients with T2DM within General Practice, while highlighting domains of success and areas where improvement can be made. Demographic and laboratory cross sectional data were collected by examining electronic patient records at one rural General Practice to address the aims of the study. Data included key management parameters of Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), microalbuminuria, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, in addition to age, sex, and residential postcode. Further, data regarding the use of insulin, antihypertensive medications and lipid-lowering medications were collected and analyzed.
